Obsidian Unveils ‘Project Eternity’ On Kickstarter

Ladies and gentlemen, we now know what Obsidian’s mysterious countdown clock was counting down to. Today they announced Project Eternity, a kickstarter-funded RPG set in an entirely original fantasy world.

“Project Eternity aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPGs that we enjoyed making – and playing,” the announcement says. “At Obsidian, we have the people responsible for many of those classic games and we want to bring those games back… and that’s why we’re here – we need your help to make it a reality!” It sounds full of potential, promising “memorable companions”, deep similarities to Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale, and ‘emotional’, ‘mature’ storytelling. So, boobies, and crying?

Combat uses “tactical real-time with pause system – positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success.” The game will have what sounds like an open world setting, with customizable character creation and plenty of NPCs to interact with. “You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you’ll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.”

Here’s the official announcement video:

OK, I’m sold. If you are too, they’re asking for a total pledge of $1,100,000, of which they’ve already raised $188,171 from 3,792 backers as of this writing. You can drop some money in the till over at the Kickstarter page.

They are almost halfway to their fundraising goal in less than 12 hours. And they have until October 14 to raise the remaining 550k or so. Anyone think they will do it?

Yeah, this sounds freaking awesome. I’m sold. Might even put some money in myself.

Super

Pledged some money myself. Finally Obsidian is ready to make my dream game. Super excited to see what they can deliver with full creative freedom.
