Obsidian Wants To Make A New Star Wars RPG

Renown RPG developer Obsidian Entertainment has expressed its desire to create a new Star Wars RPG, the company’s CEO Feargus Urquhart has disclosed.

In an interview with RockPaperShotgun, Urquhart revealed that the studio has been in talks with LucasArts to create a new role-playing game set between Episode III and Episode IV of the films.

“We pitched a between-Episode III and Episode IV game [to LucasArts]. Because we think that timeframe is super interesting,” he said. “It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi, it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few.”

“So it was an interesting time to set a game, and you know, Chris Avellone came up with a really cool story,” he teased.

Obsidian Entertainment was responsible for Knights of the Old Republic 2, which takes off after the events of the first game, developed by BioWare. The Knights of the Old Republic games are set three thousand years before the events of the films, and encompass the on-going intergalactic war between the Jedi and the Sith.

The studio is currently working on multiple games, including the South Park RPG, and the Kickstarter-funded Project Eternity.

Urquhart says that the the pitch is one of the best Obsidian has ever conceived, and hopes LucasArts’ new owners at Disney will approve the project.

Obsidian is my second-favorite RPG developer, superseded only by CDP Red. KOTOR 2, especially after the restoration mod is an outstanding game. And the Star Wars universe is always a great setting for an immersive story. Us gamers have been bereft of a good Star Wars game since Battlefront II. LucasArts should take note and let a great company make a great game with a great story.

As far as I know, both of the KOTOR games did very well. Disney should be behind this, bonus points if they try to get the original team or important people who worked on the first two.

Make it if it will be something adults can enjoy and immerse themselves into. If its going to be with heaps of restrictions from DIsney, it.

hmm. Wait, when was it? Lucasarts now is Disney’s property. If they want a new SW game, it risks being based on Episode VIII (And as mentioned before, totally bland and devoid of maturity, unlike any games from Obsidian).

As most of us still remember, KOTOR 2 was excrement. If Obsidian can actually *deliver* this time around, then yes, that time period would be an incredible backdrop for a new KOTOR. Of course, they couldn’t possibly bungle it any worse than Bioware would.
