Oculus VR Is Co-Publishing EVE: Valkyrie With CCP

Oculus VR, the crazy kids behind that virtual reality headset everyone’s been talking about, is getting into the game publishing business.

Oculus and CCP are going to co-publish EVE: Valkyrie together, and the space fighter shooter is going to be an Oculus Rift exclusive when it’s released.

From the Oculus VR blog:

“We strongly believe the best VR experiences are going to be the ones built from the ground up for VR, and we’ve kept that in mind whilst developing Valkyrie.

We wanted people to really feel like they were there – to sense the vastness of space, feel the confined area of the cockpit and get that adrenaline rush as you see an exploding fighter whizz past your head.

In a very short amount of time this passion project became a full fledged CCP project which we’re now working on in Newcastle. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come in a year!”

– CCP EVE Valkyrie team members Robert Clarke, Programmer, and Sigurður Gunnarsson, Senior Programmer

Oculus says they’ll be publishing other games, too, and we’re expecting any included works to be exclusive to the Oculus Rift, or very much favor using the company’s VR hardware.

If Oculus Rift is $300 like their Kickstarter campaign said it will be, this might not be as bad as it sounds. But if it’s any more than that, there won’t be a big enough player base for me to bother trying to play it. I still think it’s a bad idea to limit this to Oculus Rift. They could release it owners of the Oculus Rift first (maybe as a Beta), and then later release it to other people, and get the best of both worlds.
