Origin Required To Play Battlefield 3, Even If You Have It On Disc

We we were starting to suspect that Battlefield 3 would be available digitally only through Origin, and we’d been hearing that you’d have to register the game with Origin even if you bought the PC game disc. It looks like both those thoughts have been confirmed with one small tweet.

Tweeter @BF_Triton asked this question of DiCE’s Daniel Matros: What about the rumors spreading on the forums that we need origin to play BF3 if we have the DVD? D:

Matros responded back with: @BF_Triton Yes those “rumors” are true :)

It stands to reason that if you have to register with Origin even if you have the game on disc, then you would also only be able to get the game digitally through Origin. All copies go through Origin, basically. Looks like EA really means business with their fledgling download service.

Let’s see, everyone hates Origin and now it’s mandatory? I hated it when Supreme Commander 2 wanted Steam, and I *like* Steam.

I don’t like any aspect of this, but Origin is just not very well done. It’s the second most poorly implemented online shop after GFWL (where you can’t even see how much a game costs unless you click on the individual game page.) My biggest problem with Origin is that you have to go to a pull down menu to click through pages, small thing but annoying and I don’t know of any online shop selling anything that makes you do this and it just goes to show how poorly implemented Origin is.

Will it only be required to install or will it need to be running every time you play the game?
