Origin Update Allows Overlayed Features, GIF Game Tiles

EA’s Origin client received a decently large update today, number 9.4, which added one key feature and some very interesting customization options for your game library.

The biggest piece is an adjustment to the Origin in-game overlay that will allow you to “pin” other windows onto the game itself. Normally, using or even looking at any Origin In-game feature pauses the action while you mess with them, but now when you pin an item, like a chat window or the Web browser it will stay visible as you play. You can size and set opacity of the windows, too. Here is a picture of what Mass Effect 3 looks like with GameFront.com pinned at half opacity.

You can’t interact with the pinned items until you switch completely to in-game, but the news release posits it could be useful for looking at a game guide while you play or something. I’m not sure that’s more practical then tabbing or using a tablet.

There are other new tweaks as well. Now you can customize the tile for any game in your Origin library whereas before you could only do that with games you added manually. You can make their images animated gifs if you’re into that. And now you can turn off the Featured Today pop-up and automatic game updates and make Origin shut off when you’re finished playing whatever you started. Cool cool cool.
