Original Bioshock Story: Nazis on an Island
Maybe it was a twist off of Wolfenstein 3d? Whatever the case, it’s a little strange that the original plot for Bioshock involved Nazis on an island.
According to an article yesterday in CVG, this obviously was a first run idea of the Bioshock design team. “It’s impossible to sit down at the start of a project and say this game will be XYZ and it will be fun. Bioshock for instance started out on a tropical island with Nazis,” Joe McDonagh, senior desiger, told CVG.
Apparently it’s fitting because the whole story of Bioshock takes place in an abandoned World War II laboratory complex, so you might be able to see how it could have had a storyline involving the Third Reich. In fact, it could have made the game a bit edgier.
Given the PC nature of gaming, perhaps it was a good idea to keep away from the subject matter. But then again, Wolfenstein 3d was such a hit that they probably could have gotten away with it. I guess for some reason people don’t mind the idea of killing off the virtual remainder of Hitler’s army.
