Over 4.2 Million PS4 Units Sold

Today at CES 2014, Sony revealed that 4.2 million PS4 units have been sold as of Dec. 28, beating out Microsoft’s 3 million figure for its Xbox One.

Andrew House, from Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment, made the announcement during the Sony keynote, before going on to reveal PlayStation Now, a cross-platform streaming service that will make previous-generation Playstation games available later this summer.

In early December, 2.1 million PS4 units had sold since the console’s Nov. 15 release. Estimates place the console’s production cost at $381, $18 lower than the $399 retail price of the console. Factor in shipping and other expenses, and Sony is likely selling the PS4 at a loss, though not nearly as great a loss as the PS3, which sold for $599 but cost over $800 to produce.
