Pachter Predicts 360 Outsold Wii in September

npd-logo.jpgMy favorite time of month is coming up this week with the release of last month’s NPD numbers, and analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that the NPDs will show that the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii last month. He gets into specific numbers, as well – 450,000 Xbox 360 units to the Wii’s 425,000. (He also said PlayStation 3 will push 150,000 units, in case you were wondering.)

Pachter is one of the few reliable analysts in the industry, but I think he’s going to be right by an even smaller margin than he predicted. For fun, I’ll throw out some numbers as well so we can compare when the NPDs are released – PlayStation 3, 135,000; Wii, 420,000; Xbox 360, 435,000.

It’s on, Pachter.

I have just read the report of so called sales for Microsoft in September. Why is it that everyone is reporting Microsofts SHIPPED units as sales? In my market stores are stuffed with multiple versions of xbox 360s that are hangovers from the Halo 3 launch. SHIPPED units are not sales so just how many units did Microsoft SELL vs SHIPPED?

@Numanthia – Microsoft is only prone to give out shipped numbers because they look better than sold-through numbers. As far as they’re concerned, they have _sold_ those shipped units; just not to consumers.

We’ll find out in a few days how many units Microsoft did indeed sell through when the NPD numbers are released.

Hasn’t pachter been off on his prediction alot lately? Claiming the PS3 would beat the 360 one month and a few other missed guesses? I would say that if pachter predicted it, you can almost bet its not true. Don’t get me wrong, I like pachter, but his sales predictions have been consistently off base. Honestly though, when you’re talking about a margin this small, who even cares. Especially when you consider the 360′s biggest gun was behind these sales and the Wii hasn’t had a major title ship since, what, August?
