Pachter Predicts PlayStation 3 Outsold Xbox 360 in March

pachter.jpgMy favorite time of month, when NPD Group releases its data for the previous month’s game industry sales figures, is right around the corner. But my archnemesis, Wedbush Morgan Securities’ Michael Pachter, has gone ahead and given us a preview of that data — or at least what he predicts it will be.

He believes March US sales will be up to $850 million, which would be a 47% increase over last year. He also expects the PlayStation 3 to continue its strong 2008 campaign by outselling the Xbox 360 for the third month running. But, the Wii will outsell the two systems combined with an estimate of 700,000 consoles sold. If that’s true, it looks like Nintendo managed to bump up production of the console for the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. How nice of them.

In other Nintendo predictions, Pachter also believes that The Big N is sending a large chunk of the supply of its console to Europe, thanks to the weakening value of the US dollar.

He also expects the top selling games in March to of course be Smash Bros. along with Army of Two and Rainbow Six Vegas 2; no shockers there.

I’m going to have to side with Pachter, except I expect that Wii Play will be very close to what Army of Two sells on PlayStation 3.

What are your predictions for how March turned out?

“My favorite time of month, when NPD Group releases its data”

I can’t understand why people are so obsessed with console sales data. My favorite console last gen was the gamecube and that has nothing to do with it’s sales. Likewise, whichever I enjoy the most this gen won’t have anything to do with sales, so why do people care? Very little comes from fans paying such close attention to sales data. It inevitably leads to fanboy flamewars. But yeah, I bet 360 outsold the PS3 hellsyeah!!!!!!1111!! ;)

I’ve gotta agree with used cisco. I also do not understand the average Joe’s fascination with the sales figures. I guess it gives the folks on the ‘winning’ side another reason to spout how ‘right’ they were in making the decision they did. Basically though it’s just a d*** measuring contest.

Okay, well I’m not exactly Average Joe since I spend hours and hours everyday looking at this stuff, analyzing it, thinking about it. So I like to see how all of that ends up impacting sales at the end of a month.

It’s not about being able to go “OMG SONY ROX UR HOUSE” or anything.

Nintendo rules, Sony has its balance back and Microsoft is a real player when 5 years ago they were a joke. The industry is in great shape

“It’s not about being able to go “OMG SONY ROX UR HOUSE” or anything.’

Sure it is. Just less so for you.

Gaming as a hobby has become like a sport.

The console manufacturers are the teams.

The consoles/games are the plays.

The sales numbers is the score.

And we are the fans.

It’s just that some of us love the sport and others love certain teams. But in the end it’s still just a score and people, for whatever reason, put WAY too much emphasis on it.

One thing for sure, the “king” of the console war, Sony, is now battling fiercely for the 2nd place with Microsoft.

Their design team lost their touch with average gamer, and PS3 is mediocre at best. Other than the minor graphic improvement of PS3 over PS2, Sony contributed a little to the evolution of the latest console generation. Maybe PS4 will be a better product.

What are the consoles famous for?
Nintendo Wii and interactivity
Xbox 360 andonline content

Not surprised the PS3′s been beating the 360 for 3 months now – about time!

Yes, the 360 has great games, and Xbox live is great …

BUT .. the xbox 360 has HUGE quality problem with its console. I have gone thru 4 360′s. 16 of my friends are on their 2nd or 3rd 360! What the heck is going on???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0-9EGPQs8A

That pretty well sums up I and lot of other people now feel about the 360. I loved the 1st xbox and still have it – no problems.

It’s obvious Microsoft rushed the 360 to market and there are still big problems with the design. I am buying a PS3 and to heck with the 360 – I’m done!

When I spend hundreds of $ on a console, I expect it to last longer than a few months. And then when it dies, I want a new system back or my same system repaired, not a refurbished system that dies a few months later and then I get another and another. If the xbox 360 was a car or TV, consumers would be taking fits and demand a recall. Get your act together Microsoft, admit your console is crap and do something about it. Final thing, that 3 year warranty on Xbox is only for RROD ! Anyone doubts there is serious trouble should check out Xbox.com’s very own forums, hardware and read and weep at the horror stories.

i predict Wii will outsell every console in history when Star Wars: The Force Unleashed comes out. i havent been a nintendo fan since the early 90s, but i know i’m getting a Wii just for that sweet lightsaber action. it will be the best way to work out your arm since, well… you know

 “It’s just that some of us love the sport and others love certain teams.”

Ugh! Hey guys, It’s all about the games. I’d rather hear about how many copies of Call of Duty 4 were sold up to date. I’m only a fan of game developers, not console design. There are several platforms, including PC (my favorite), that a game can be released on. Some games are released on all platforms. Some great games are only released for a specific console so that people are sucked into buying that console. It’s an evil marketing ploy. Overall, the little guy could care less about numbers. I never read much about game consoles, but of course I’ve read all about the new GTA release that is due. Without the marketing of the many dedicated game developers a console would be as useful as my toaster or DVD player. I really wish that PC gamers weren’t neglected. My PC is more powerful than a PS3.
I stopped chasing game consoles, and have the patience to enjoy PC gaming.

JMS said – “Microsoft is a real player when 5 years ago they were a joke”

You are aware that given how badly the 360 is selling outside of the US there is a realistic chance it might not sell much more than the original Xbox did?

@ SWAT_4

My PC is more powerful than a PS3 also but that doesn’t mean it can play GT5, Final Fantasy 13 or Metal Gear Solid does it? Are you under the impression that bench marked power is more important than games? I enjoy PC gaming but I own a PS3 to play the great games that arent on the PC.

@ Lee

You are a fool. You say the PS3 only offers ‘minor graphic improvement over PS2′? That’s one of the most stupid things I’ve read on here and pretty much exposes you as the retarded Xbot you are  As for it battling for second place? LMAO The 360 is tanking worldwide and will finish way last. The 360 has been outsold every week in 2008 by the Wii, PS3, PSP, DS and PS2. There is no battling going on, just the 360 imploding and the PS3 catching it rapidly. The PS3 will almost certainly win this console war because it will still be selling in 5-10 years time unlike the Wii.

@Norbit

I own all of them except the wii because I see no fun in that (besides super smash bro on a gamecube controller). Anybody that owns both a PS3 and an Xbox 360 will tell you that as of right now, the 360 is a much better console. Its online owns the PS3, and PS3 has no really good games right now. Now ever since the PS3 has come out, everyone has been preaching these games that are gonna change the face of the universe and they keep getting pusehd back or they suck (Lair anybody?). PS3′s online was like an afterthought, I mean if I don’t have a bluetooth headset I’m basically SOL on speaking with anyone.

Now truthfully, xbox 360 fans need to quit thinking their games are the greatest ever. Truthfully, the only reason I buy 360 games anymore is to play online with friends… most of them are trash, especially the ones the majority of people seemed obsessed with (halo 3 anyone?)

PC fans… I cry for you. PC is superior in every single way. It costs way less than a console to keep up and maintain once you have a good base system(180 dollar Nvidia 8800GT will play any game at a high resolution and detail with a normal system besides crysis) and gets absolutely no credit for its games. Company of Heroes, Battlefield 2, Counter Strike Source, Supreme Commander, Crysis Editor (game sucks), Call of Duty 4(18 player matches on the 360 just cant really compare to 36 or more). We need more respect.

Failbox is just way too noisy to be enjoyable. PS3 doesn’t have that problem, it’s just way too expensive. So overall they both fail.

Sam

On April 17, 2008 at 12:40 am

Firstly, I need someone to explain to my why the ps3 online is an after thought, this i don’t get.

It has a nice online store that even some 360 guys are saying ‘wow that’s better than live market place’ – now they have the icon load times sorted  Its free, we have dedicated servers and don’t rely on p2p servers as much, infact some developers say they prefer the online freedom that sony gives them on the dev. side when compared to live.

Now you do have achievements, which I personally don’t care about, but sony is going to copy and I believe thats going to be part of home (they patched lair i believe to include test achievements). And I know you get in game messaging? But again this is being implemented. Now i know ‘being implemented’ isn’t the same as currently in use by X amount of users like it is on live.

So please, I’m not being an ass, but i really just want to read more than ‘Live owns the PSN’

As for the machines themselves,……… Well I can honestly see what nintendo was harping on about, I love my PS3, but i am sorry, its the last gen with better gfx thats it. At least the wii brought something new to the table, even if its implemented pretty badly by 3rd parties (yes i also own a wii and pc).

I pretty much also view the 360 and ps3 as the same, in fact the ONLY reason i purchased a ps3 was because of the RROD and the shape of the ps3 pad which i am used to due to the ps3, and those are the ONLY reasons.

“Failbox is just way too noisy to be enjoyable. PS3 doesn’t have that problem, it’s just way too expensive. So overall they both fail.”

Only $50 more for 40gig that the premium, if you’re going to online, you don’t pay for so that’s your $50 right there – altho i guess you don’t get the headset so you have to go blow $20 on a bluetooth one.

ASO to fanboys
I own one “next gen” console. When I run out of games I like playing on it I will have to use up some gift cards. No need to argue about which is better as long as u enjoy playing it.

On April 17, 2008 at 3:17 am

eh, ps3 was a better buy overall you get a bunch more stuff for less in the end, and xbox has a crap ton of add ons that really pile up the expenses over a period of time, however xbox came out first, so i guess you could say they didnt have access to the same technology…but thats pretty much false since the gap between releases was so small..

I really dont have anything against xbox 360 it was entertaining for the time i owned it, but i sold it when i got bored with the games i bought it to play for, so i moved on to ps3 where my games are, and will be coming out… i love bluray and hd…but bluray wins!

benjamin(nigeria)

On April 17, 2008 at 3:58 am

guys… you wine against the sales mainly on certain region. japan is a big boost for the ps3 sales but for africa mainly nigeria i dont know any one using the ps3 they all go for the x360 and i think its a better console because of its social gaming ability. the ps3 can be considered over its bluray feature. in nigeria who cares about that most people dont even know what is hd.

On April 17, 2008 at 7:02 am

Whats wrong with a usb headset for the ps3?
Anyway I think the ps3 is definately next gen.
It has blu ray, motion sensing, bluetooth etc – features that set it apart from the last gen.
But, one of the main things about a console being next gen is the power of the console. That is why the 360 is next gen- because of its power, the wii is next gen because of its features- motion sensing, bluetooth but the ps3 is next gen because it is best of both worlds. Power of the xbox combined with the admitedly slightly inferior to wii motion sensing, blu ray, bluetooth, divx compatibility etc.
But worst of all about the xbox – its Microwank.
Nothing involved with microwank can be any good. Sure it gets good games released for because microwank pays for them all to be exclusive and yes they are fun, but its Microsoft and like always they have messed up completely on the hardware its self. So really it is the WORST console, but slightly redeemed by the fact it has good games payed for to be made for it. (although halo and gears are all coming out for the mac anyway – LOL)

I normally do not care about sales figures in general but Norbit’s stupidity irritates me to no end so I will comment.

Norbit is obviously either on Sony’s payroll, or he’s just been duped into thinking that somehow the PS3 (aka glorified Blu-Ray player) is the best console out there when the only place on earth where the PS3 beats the 360 is in Japan. Everywhere else in the world, the 360 sells better. Want proof check VGcharts.com, granted, that is not the most reliable source for sales statistics but it does reflect a generally accurate count.

Not only that, the PS3 (aka glorified Blu-Ray player) has the least amount of exclusive games, and personnaly of all the exclusive games the PS3 (aka glorifed Blu-Ray player) has only one might interest me.

Plus the Wii is kicking everybody’s ass so why the title of this article isn’t simply, “The Wii kicks everyone’s ass in sales,” is beyond me.

Norbit knows PC’s, that much is clear, but when it comes to consoles he doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. He’s a Sony fanboy poser.

@ManofTeal: No offense, but you should probably pick a better source for your sales info. Looks like the last update over at vgcharts was mid 2007.

The only way to decide who sells the most consoles is to wait until none of them are selling anymore, and then see where the numbers are. That may be 5-10 years down the road. Until then, who cares?

ManOfTeal

On April 18, 2008 at 9:02 am

@Ron,

Is VGCharts.com really that bad? Everyone I ever talk to about them seems to hold them with contempt. I honestly thought they were a somewhat reliable source for sales figures. Guess not.
