Pachter Predicts PlayStation 3 Outsold Xbox 360 in March
My favorite time of month, when NPD Group releases its data for the previous month’s game industry sales figures, is right around the corner. But my archnemesis, Wedbush Morgan Securities’ Michael Pachter, has gone ahead and given us a preview of that data — or at least what he predicts it will be.
He believes March US sales will be up to $850 million, which would be a 47% increase over last year. He also expects the PlayStation 3 to continue its strong 2008 campaign by outselling the Xbox 360 for the third month running. But, the Wii will outsell the two systems combined with an estimate of 700,000 consoles sold. If that’s true, it looks like Nintendo managed to bump up production of the console for the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. How nice of them.
In other Nintendo predictions, Pachter also believes that The Big N is sending a large chunk of the supply of its console to Europe, thanks to the weakening value of the US dollar.
He also expects the top selling games in March to of course be Smash Bros. along with Army of Two and Rainbow Six Vegas 2; no shockers there.
I’m going to have to side with Pachter, except I expect that Wii Play will be very close to what Army of Two sells on PlayStation 3.
What are your predictions for how March turned out?
