Pachter Reports PS3 Outsold Xbox 360 in July

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has released the preview of his report for July U.S. hardware and software sales that is guaranteed to have fan boys up in arms.

The Wii continues to lead console sales with 330,000 units sold for July However Sony sold 160,000 PS3 consoles as opposed to the Xbox 360 console selling only 115,000 units.

Pachter attributes the jump in PS3 sales to the price break implemented at E3 2007.

Despite the decline of Xbox 360 sales, Pachter believes the console sales will experience a period of new growth since “the warranty has been communicated to consumers, the price has been cut, and (it appears) the design flaw that caused the high failure rate has been corrected.”

Pachter predicts July’s software sales will be driven by Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80′s and NCAA Football 08, as well as Guitar Hero II, Wii Play and Mario Party 8. He predicts the DS will remain dominant in handheld sales, selling 450,000 units while PSP trails at only 225,000 units.

“We forecast [game] sales of $425 million, up 12.5% compared to last year’s $378 million… Our estimate reflects $295 million in sales contribution from new platforms (PS3, Wii, 360, PSP and DS) and current generation software sales of $130 million.”

I believe Sony also sold over 200,000 PS2′s which people seem to forget about.

It makes me laugh that people keep banging on about how successful the Wii is when the biggest selling console worldwide this year is the PS2. I suppose that fact doesn’t fit in with the Sony bashing so it gets ignored.

‘the design flaw that caused the high failure rate has been corrected.’

Its been acknowledged and responsibility has been taken for fixing the damage it causes. It has not been corrected.

Actually Norbit, I believe that the new units being built have been updated. And though the 360 may have slowed, I still haven’t picked mine up for Halo-3 yet, and know a few other people in the same boat as I. This being said, the PS3 will only continue to rise in sales as it receives more games that people want to play. I have seen the graphics on a 1280i projector, and they are suhweet.

I’ll clarify. They may have stopped selling faulty consoles (allegedly) but they haven’t ‘corrected the fault’ in any way. They haven’t ‘corrected’ the consoles they have repaired. They just repaired the damage the fault caused and they haven’t ‘corrected’ the potential fault in millions of consoles sold. The only way they could have done that is by recalling them. I was under the impression that the consoles they are selling now are exactly the same hardware as the faulty ones and the fault is only going to go away with the new 65nm CPU.

As far as correcting the fault it must have done it yesterday because my buddy got one two weeks ago and it was broke out of the box.
