Pachter: SWTOR Could Now Attract Up to 50M Monthly Active Users

According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, SWTOR’s move to a free-to-play business model will result in tremendous — and perhaps even unprecedented — success for the MMORPG. Pachter believes the game can reach a core audience of 10M to 50M active users.

In an investors note, Pachter wrote:

“We believe the free-to-play option and lower retail price will combine to significantly increase the number of Star Wars players by the end of the year as the two largest barriers to entry for potential Star Wars gamers (apart from an appreciation for the franchise and PC gaming) have been significantly reduced or eliminated.”

It doesn’t take a market analyst to tell you that more people will play a game if they don’t have to pay for it, but fortunately, Pachter backed this up with some estimated numbers, saying that SWTOR now has the potential to “attract at least 10 million MAUs indefinitely, with upside to perhaps 50 million,” and that, “we believe that contribution from the model shift could be significant for years to come.”

50 million active players? I think 10 million is a lofty goal, but 50? What do you think?

I played the first two months, but quit since I felt other games needed attention and I didn’t want to pay for playtime I didn’t use. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game, loved to play it. I’ll definitely install it again.

50 Million?

No way. Though I do plan on trying it out this fall, and perhaps buying it. All depends on how my job's going at the time…

It’s funny how developers continue to think that gamers don’t have any taste or opinion and will mindlessly play whatever is shoved down their throat, especially if it’s for “free”. This Pachter thinks that there are millions of players waiting at SWTOR’s door, all like “Aww, SWTOR! I want to play it! But it costs 15$ a month. Meh! If only it was free!”… Well it’s not like that. If the subscription based game could not hold its subscribers to the point where it had to switch to “free to play” than most likely this game is not worth playing even for free.

I doubt 50m people are being held back by the monthly subscription charges.

Was the goal to quote a number so absurdly astronomical as to do nothing but get massive lulz?

I think TOR’s move short term is going to be strong. They might get back to around 2 mill, maybe more if they introduce real content.

But 50 mill? This guy just trolled Gamefront, offering yup a steaming pile of traffic bait.
