PAX 2007: Two New Maps and Weapons Revealed for Halo 3
Each year’s PAX has concluded in much the same way: with the two remaining contestants in the Omegathon — a multi-platform gaming tournament — battling through the final round with an old school classic, such as Pong or Tetris. This year however, the folks over at Penny Arcade decided to end the tournament with a bang. The main theater was packed with people when the final event began with the Minibosses performing a rock version of the Halo theme, complete with flashing lights and a smoke machine running. After that, the two remaining contestants were introduced, and it was revealed that they would be playing Halo 3 on two never-before-seen maps littered with brand new weapons.
The first match was set at a 15-kill limit and took place in a map called “Guardian.” The map featured a dark, jungle setting, with lots of platforms and passageways. It was in this map that we got to see a slew of devastating new weapons in action, such as the gravity hammer, the Fuel Rod Cannon, and the flamethrower (a crowd favorite). The contestants also got their hands on a couple of new grenades: a fire bomb and a flashbang. The next map — set at a five-kill limit — was called “Narrows” and featured two large towers with two bridges connecting them. There was also an ATV-like vehicle, called the “Mongoose,” and several platforms that could launch a player to the other end of the map. All in all, it was a pretty intense couple of rounds, especially with the crowd cheering at every kill and new weapon. In the end though, Accolon managed to snuff out MNC Dover for the $5,000 prize along with tickets to the Tokyo Game Show. The whole event was a huge spectacle and felt a lot like a rock concert. It was certainly a fitting conclusion to such a massive gaming convention.
