Borderlands 2 Adds New Mechromancer Class, Character Customization (UPDATED)
UPDATE: The information in this story has been corrected after Gearbox issued a release clarifying a few of the details.
Gearbox showed off a new addition to Borderlands 2‘s possible characters at its PAX East 2012 panel this weekend: the Mecromancer, seen above, in all her Punky Brewster glory.
The class is one Gearbox is planning to introduce after Borderlands 2 ships — the idea being to add the class into the game later, using a compatibility patch, and release it as DLC. The good news? That DLC will be free to players who are paying attention.
In order to get in on the free DLC, you’ll need to join the Borderlands 2 “Premiere Club,” which basically means you’ll need to pre-order the game from a participating retailer. More details on that are right here.
If you don’t pre-order the game, you can still snag the Mechromancer as post-launch DLC, which Randy Pitchford said he hoped would be “comparable to most DLC” for those players who would have to pay for it.
The Gearbox team also discussed character customization, which will consist of gear and outfits for characters that players will have to earn through playing the game — it won’t be a stock pile of clothes you can access at the outset of the game (or, presumably, purchase for cash).
Instead, you’ll get gear for completing missions, ranking up, and finishing challenges. You’ll also get rewarded with a custom skin if you played the first Borderlands.
Gearbox also said there will be a special edition version of Borderlands 2 available at release, which will retail for $149.99.
Game Front is on-site at PAX East all weekend (April 6-8), bringing you daily news, hands-on previews, interviews and pictures. Stay tuned for more PC gaming-focused coverage!
