PC Indie Title Platformines Gets Open Beta

France-based Magiko Gaming announced Wednesday that their PC Indie game Platformines, a platformer with open world, RPG, and shooter elements, is now available in open beta form. The charmingly retro game offers players a rogue-like experience in which explorable worlds are randomly generated. Better, the worlds are provided seamlessly, with no in-game loading. It also features an excellentm Wendy Carlos-inspired sountrack in which classical compositions are rendered in old timey synthesizer form.

The team behind Magiko Gaming have previously worked on several AAA franchies including Metroid Prime, and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. Platformines was originally intended as a mobile and downloadable console game, however the team has now decided to focus solely on making “something bigger and deeper for PC”. Players interested in trying it out can download the open beta here.

And as always, because we love you, here’s the full press release:

“Platformines”, a unique platformer with exploration, RPG and shooter elements, set in a huge and hostile underground world is now available as free PC open beta.

In “Platformines”, players embark in a journey to discover the mysteries of a gigantic network of mines full of enemies, traps and treasures. “Platformines” offers seamless (no ingame loading) randomly generated worlds to explore, in a quest that takes from 6 to 10 hours to complete. Discover hidden chests, grab bags of gold and choose from a gazillion of different weapon variations like pistols, shotguns, machineguns and bazookas to blast your way to the end. You run, jump and shoot in a tightly designed environment, with the 2D hero you have previously customized from thousands of combinations : so you could look like a sharp adventurer, a nasty member of the mob or a lazy treasure hunter. RPG elements include trading and upgrading your gear so your stats are better and you can go further to tackle the more difficult parts of the mines. The game music mixes chiptune versions of compositions from the classical masters like Tchaikovsky and Rossini, with ambient atmospheric chilling tracks.

Magiko Gaming is a french indie team of 2 video game industry veterans (worked on TestDrive Unlimited, Metroid Prime, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, John Romero’s Daikatana even!). We started our indie adventure with the release of 2 small platformer games featuring a single but very detailed level packed with traps and challenges: “Platformance: Castle Pain” and “Platformance: Temple Death”. Both games were nicely accepted by gamers and press alike ( “If Super Meat Boy and Journey to the Center of the Earth had a love child, this would probably be it.” -IndieGames.com ). Following this, we decided to port the games to mobile phone, but after an aborted opportunity with Microsoft for WindowsPhone7 Xbox Live Games, we felt it was time to come back to our gamer roots and put all our efforts into something bigger and deeper for PC. So we started toying with this idea of making a crazy platformer/shooter taking place in a huge world. Loving the simplicity of the 2D games from the 80s (tight gameplay, humorous pixel art, catchy chiptunes), we then drew inspiration from modern games we love like Borderlands, Minecraft, Terraria, Spelunky to make our design. And so the “Platformines” design was born 10 months ago. Today, after hours of playing and refining it, we are excited to release the beta to PC players around the world so they can get a taste of it.
