People Can Fly and Epic Games Join Forces, Unleash Tongue-in-Cheek Shooter Bulletstorm, Now with Release Date
Cliffy B did double duty at E3 today, stopping by Microsoft’s presser to promote Gears of War 3 before moving on to EA’s event to pimp his new project, Bulletstorm, a collaboration with Polish developers People Can Fly. After a slightly overzealous intro spiel that focused mainly on the fact that the game will enable you to do “awesome shit,” the trio of developers onstage got down to business with a fairly lengthy gameplay video.
“Pulp” was definitely a buzzword, and the game’s bombastic tone was in evidence right from the outset, with lots of hard-boiled dialogue and winkingly-cheesy sci-fi exposition. The sharp, ever-so-stylized graphics were impressive, and the game showed off marathon draw distances and futuristic cityscapes that looked a little like a big budget version of last year’s Bionic Commando remake.
The combat was appropriately over-the-top (one of the devs onstage described it as a “symphony of blood”), with an interesting kick-based melee mechanic and the obligatory chain-gun mayhem. It finished with a cinematic chase sequence that smacked of Gears. As an adaption of mid-90′s Punisher comics and other subject matter close to Mr. Belizinksi’s heart, Bulletstorm is shaping up to be a popular, high-octane shooter with an idiosyncratic style. Gamers can find out for themselves next year — the game releases on 2/22/2011
