Peter Moore: The Transition to Digital Delivery Will Kill Some Companies

EA COO Peter Moore (speaking with IndustryGamers) thinks the move to digital delivery of all video game content is inevitable, and that it could kill some companies.

The companies that have prepared themselves and have diversified their offerings to chase the consumer wherever they want to play games are the companies that will succeed and thrive and flourish. Companies that continue to rely on the old model as the model changes before our eyes, unless they change their ways and invest in the future those companies eventually will die off. No two ways about it.

Very bleak, Peter. Very bleak indeed. But he’s probably right. Someone will cling to the old ways too long and won’t be able to catch up. Probably. Or maybe everyone will heed this warning and no one will be left behind. Yeah!

He’s obviously been reading the news stories about book publishers, etc. That must be like JAWS to him. duh dun duh dun.

It seems more likely that companies will fold from other [typical] reasons first. The move to digital doesn’t seem terribly difficult – its even saved some of the little companies.

It may be that all video/Game software sales will one day become all digital however game stores will NEVER die off, instead of selling Plastic blocks and discs they’ll be selling software that you download right in the shop instead.

This imaginary future that everyone seems to have where you buy everything from home and theres no alternatives will NEVER happen.

???? Why do people need to get off their asses and go to a shop just to do that? With the interwebz I never have to leave the house for software, games, books, movies or music.

You must mean on the consoles, then yeah your probably right, someone will probably have to install it for you at the shop, GAMESTOP, BB GEEKSQUAD because of the complicated DRM and all.
