Petraeus Scandal Unintentionally Hilarifies Black Ops 2

At last, an excuse to write about one of the silliest sex scandals in recent memory!

By now, all of you are aware that former CIA chief David Petraeus resigned last week after it came out that he’s been sleeping with his biographer, “All In: The Education of David Petraeus” author Paula Broadwell. We won’t rehash the whole thing here, but suffice to say it’s a lazy gossip columnist’s dream! Until this whole thing blew up, Petraeus was one of the brightest rising stars in the American political scene. Credited with turning the Iraq war around back in 2006, he’s served as top commander in two theaters, under two consecutive presidential administrations. President Obama verified the bipartisan love fest by tapping him to serve as CIA director last year. If that sounds like a political dead end, consider that George H. W. Bush also served as CIA chief back in the 70s; the appointment may as well have been a knighthood, in other words.

That’s obviously why it made sense for Activision and Treyarch to feature Petraeus as the Secretary of State in the 2025 setting of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. (The image at the top of the page is from one of his cutscenes. Note that they used a Voice Actor, not the man himself.) Unfortunately, the scandal blew up the week before Black Ops 2 was launched, so now, instead of a version of the future in which current trends are realistically extrapolated, we have the hilarity of a digital time capsule that forever preserves the memory of a career in politics ended because someone whose judgment was considered beyond reproach turned out to be susceptible to outrageous flattery.

Today, Petraeus is probably hoping this whole thing goes away so he can move on to the next phase of life (let’s be honest: he’ll have his own cable news show within a year.) Unfortunately, his infamy will live on in the memory of millions of gamers, at least when they’re not insulting each other on Xbox Live. It could be worse, we suppose. Black Ops 2 could have featured input and advice from someone who willfully broke the law to provide weapons to our enemies. Oh, wait.
