Pitchford is Surprised No One Has Cloned Borderlands

Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford doesn’t get why nobody has made an obvious rip-off of Borderlands. With a sequel about to launch and a successful FPS-RPG hybrid that’s just been sitting on the market for a while, it’s sort of an anomaly that no one has bothered to copy it, he says.

“We’re in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other,” Pitchford told Gamasutra. “I’m actually astonished that we’re about to launch a sequel and no one’s stole it from us. The formula’s right there. No one’s stolen it yet. That’s weird.

“Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I’m challenging people to steal it.”

Pitchford also said, among other things, that trying to promote Borderlands was tough. It was hard to describe the game, being a new piece of intellectual property, without giving away the secrets of what made it so fun, he said.

You can find the rest of the interview here, which is pretty interesting. Borderlands 2 is due in September.

Umm…..Fallout 3, anyone? Fallout:New Vegas? RAGE? Brink?
Yes, nobody has copied Borderlands specific formula, but it’s not like there’s a shortage of post-apocalyptic wasteland shooter/rpg titles out there. Atm, I’d say it’s actually one of the more common genres.

Fallout 3 came out before Borderlands. New vegas was basically the same game except with the original dev’s take on it so they are hardly ripoffs. Hell, fallout 3 was cited has inspiration for Borderlands. Just saying.
