Pitchford Talks Borderlands 2 DLC: ‘Big Stuff’ Planned

Count us among those jells of Kotaku this morning, as we read through the reader interview with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford they hosted at the end of last week. As these things go, the interview has its share of superfluous questions, but it also provided an opportunity for Pitchford to elaborate on the DLC plan for Borderlands 2. Long story short, they’ve got big things in store, which is great news for those of us still having our minds kind of blown by one of the year’s best games.

Here’s a rundown of what he said:

* They’ve got some big stuff coming, still currently in development. “We’re extremely far along with the first campaign DLC,” Pitchford says. “The second DLC is also in amazing shape. The third DLC is a little farther out and the fourth DLC is just in the pre-concept stages.”

* These four big packets would be the DLC planned for Season Pass holders, but robust, non-Season Pass content is coming as well. “We will have other, non-season pass related DLC,” Pitchford confirmed, adding that “the additional character (Mechromancer) is one kind of example.” He also said that intense response from customers is prompting strong consideration of additional DLC beyond what they have already planned.

* It looks like they’ll be ending the ability to purchase the season pass once the DLC becomes available. “The big campaign DLC’s are currently available at a discount with the “Season Pass” which is available at select retailers or on Steam. I believe you can also purchase it in-game. I would not be surprised if the Season Pass option is no longer available once the first campaign DLC becomes available.” Translation: They’re really trying to build up season pass momentum. This isn’t a deep observation, but I fully expect the 4 Season Pass packs will become available for non holders at a later date, and at a higher price point.

* The Premier Club DLC will be ‘totally separate’ from Season Pass content.

So, how many of you are playing Borderlands 2? And which platform? Let’s talk about it in comments.

Hang on, what… is he saying that the campaign DLC will only be available to people with Season Pass and nobody else? Or did he just word that incredibly poorly? This new season pass fad is just piling more bull in to the already bull-laden DLC world. I’m just getting tired of all these caveats and special circumstances people have to go through to play game content anymore. Just make games, and sell them, you bastards.

@ beema – You misinterpreted. There are two types of DLC in the works. Those that fall under the season pass, more specifically the campaign DLC. Then the second type is considered “non-season pass” DLC, meaning, even if you have the season pass, you still have to pay for it, an example of this is the Mecromancer DLC coming next month. All DLC is available to everyone, its just if you have the season pass, then you wont have to pay for the campaign based DLC.
