PlanetSide 2 Launch Trailer Blows Stuff Up But Good

In celebration of today’s launch of MMOFPS PlanetSide 2, SOE has released a trailer showing what all the fuss is about. The sequel to its 2003 title, this one runs on an entirely new engine to support the large scale conflict on Auraxis.

Thousands of players at a time can engage in battles over territory by foot or by ground and air vehicles. Three main factions include the hardy Terran Republic, the rebel New Conglomerate, and the alien technology-using Vanu Sovereignty. Combat is designed to be largely determined by player skill based instead of in-game abilities.

Unlike the previous title, there’s actual lore to back up the conflict. Comic book legend Marv Wolfman was tapped by SOE to create the history behind the three factions battling for control of the planet.

And if you want the world to know about your kills, they’ve even included live broadcasting built in to the client via Twitch.tv.

The title is free-to-play with a cash shop that can give you early access to weapons and vehicles that you can also obtain through gameplay if you want to save your money. There is also a monthly subscription option that grants increased exp gain and faster certification progress (the skills you need to use new weapons.)

So is this a worthy diversion from BLOPS 2?
