Planetside 2 Releases Game Update 4, Adds VR Room
Planetside 2 released its fourth major update yesterday, and it’s a doozy. I don’t mean just for the nascent MMOFPS, though; this update is a big deal to the free-to-play model period. Why? It introduces a VR room where you can play with any item you want for free. A few games have had similar mechanics, but to my knowledge only one has anything as deep as this.
The VR room allows you to use any item in the game with any combination of certifications and mods. You have infinite certs while in VR, so you may as well use them to try out your dream build. It’s great for determining what upgrades are great (hint: medgun is a safe bet) and what kind of attachments you should hook onto your favorite gun. It’s a big shift in the buyer beware nature of free-to-play games, and I sincerely hope it catches on elsewhere. It also places a much bigger incentive on Sony to properly balance weapons – as players will find out which ones suck pretty quickly – and gives them a metric tool to figure out what changes need to be made. In short, it’s a revolution.
Besides the VR room, Game Update 4 brought some changes to passive cert gain, some balance changes to ammo and explosions, a massive increase in XP gained from scoring a vehicle kill, and a cloak for the Flash. Another major update is planned for later this month to cover stuff that didn’t ship with this one, like the new Empire-specific anti-vehicle launches. You can take a look at the patch notes on the PS2 site.
