PlanetSide 2 Will See Thousands of Players Simultaneously Compete (VIDEO)

Members of PlanetSide 2‘s development team spoke about the sequel to the nearly decade-old MMOFPS in a video that revealed more footage of the game than we’ve ever seen. PlanetSide 2 promises to house the largest-scale combat ever seen in an online shooter, with thousands of players directly and simultaneously competing with one another.

The question is, from a technological standpoint, how are they going to handle these massive battles? Battlefield 3 sees a maximum of 64 vs. 64; PS2 wants to raise the bar by an entire order of magnitude.

The video was ripped by a YouTube user from the official website of Chinese co-developer The9, so no higher-resolution is available, sadly.

It was done in Planetside when Planetside first came out. Hundreds of players from all three sides in the same screen.

Battlefield 2 supported up to 256 players in one server.

Eve has also pulled off the same thousands vs thousands at one time battles.

PlanetSide and BF2 supported hundreds, yes — PS2 is said to support thousands. That’s ten times more. Yes, technology has advanced, but a lot of that technology has gone into advancing graphics. What kind of machine will we need to support awesome graphics AND thousands of players? TOR gets laggy with a couple dozen people in the same area, and TOR’s graphics aren’t exactly awesome.

EVE is a special case — though I had only heard of battles consisting of 100s rather than 1000s of players, the fact that battles consist of spaceships pew-pewing each other makes it less processor intensive than an FPS with full physics, animated character models, etc.

@CJ Miozzi

I’m just saying is all, back when PS originally had around 250 – 500 people in the same area with the tech we had back then, shouldn’t be too much of a challenge.

Either way it goes I hope they don’t pull a MAG and just have little skrimishes going on.

If the devs can come up with a way to stick it to the cheaters, then I’ll play. I really don’t want another debacle like with the original Planetside.
