The PlayOn Beta is now available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Whether you own a next-gen console or have a HP MediaSmart TV, PlayOn will allow you to watch Internet content from Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and more of your favorite sites on your television.
PlayOn is accepting applications for beta testers, so if you’re interested check out the PlayOn page at the MediaMall site. The full version of PlayOn is due out soon and MediaMall expects to support the Wii by the end of 2008.
I’ve actually been following this service for a while now. Being able to watch all my Netflix on my big screen TV in HD has a lot of appeal.

I was starting to wonder when it’d begin. It needs to be done before the NXE.

PlayOn will not play Netflix movies in HD. Simple reason is that Netflix still doens’t have any HD content. Most movies come in 640x480i or 640x480p resolution.
I am streaming Netflix, Hulu and YouTube via D-Link DSM-520 HD media player quite happily now after MediaMall resolved some compatibility problems. There are not hiccups when streaming either, although if the computer where PlayOn is installed is not fast enough, you may have to try to play the clip several times because something in the server times out.
But surely, when HD content becomes available, it would be pretty cool to be able to stream it right to big screen TV.
