PopCap Says Zynga “Buys Customers”
This may feel like a step down from the s**tslinging that went on yesterday between EA and Activision just because PopCap (Zuma! Bejeweled!) and Zynga (Mafia Wars! Farmville!) are more in the casual realm of gaming, but it’s still fun and it’s still gaming, so I’m posting it.
PopCap CEO Dave Roberts at the Washing Technology Industry Association TechNW conference yesterday:
They are a marketing company. They are a media company. They are awfully good at it. But we believe that ultimately, and it’s our bias, that… great games are always going to be better than great marketing.
Zynga is really good at sort of using money to buy their customers every day. That’s an interesting business model, but becomes complicated.
He then went on to point out that more people play Bejeweled on Facebook than Mafia Wars. Kablammo, indeed. Dave Robert did, to be fair, manage to be much more civil in his criticisms than Bobbert Kotick or EA were able to be yesterday, and there’s something to be said for not trolling like a mad man. On the other hand, I really like trolling, which is why I will assert that many of my readers were probably in the remedial reading class in first grade. I’m just kiddin’; I love y’all.
