Keep checking back for regular updates throughout the week, as our tireless team work to make it an invaluable resource for fans of the game.

“Portrait of a Lady” Achievement

“Exile Villify” by The National

The band The National has written and recorded a song just for Portal 2, and you can find it in your adventures in Chapter 2. It’s located in the second Rat Man den you come across, playing on a radio there. Watch the video below to see how to find it, as well as all the Rat Man dens.

Extra Dialog
Just about every character in the game will spew all kinds of extra dialog lines at you if only you’re willing to let them. Any time a character gives you an order or asks you to advance to the next section, just sit tight and listen to them. They’ll almost always just keep talking for quite a while, and the lines are often hilarious.

Aperture Science posters
Keep your eyes peeled in the Testing Spheres in chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 for various posters from Aperture about procedures, information and emergencies. When you first hit the Repulsion Gel test, for example, you can read about how it was originally designed as a pudding-form dietary supplement, until it was involved in many lawsuits. Other posters encourage testers to work safely to avoid investigations that will slow down Science, and explain what to do in the event of a rogue A.I.

Rat Man Dens

Den 1

Location: Test Chamber 4, Chapter 1

You’ll reach this first Rat Man den automatically when you fall through a glass surface as part of the story.

Den 2

Location: Test Chamber 3, Chapter 2

Includes: Easter Egg “Exile Villify” by The National

When you get to the Discouragement Redirection Cube (the weighted storage cube with the lenses used for redirecting lasers), look across to the wall opposite your position. You should see a hole in the wall that you can slip through. Here you’ll also find a radio playing the song “Exile Villify” by The National. The group actually wrote the song just for Portal 2, and you can listen to it in its entirety in the room.

Den 3

Location: Test Chamber 6, Chapter 2

Includes: “Final Transmission” Achievement/Trophy

To get to this Rat Man den, you’ll have to carefully position some portals and launch yourself using an aerial faith plate (one of those catapult things). The den is accessible through a vent that’s easy to miss. Get there by starting at the door to the chamber and looking for two angled panels on the right side of the room. Put a portal on the higher, right-most panel, then one on the wall to the left, where the white portal-accepting panels stretch out on the bottom a little further than they do on the top. When you go through the portals using the faith plate, this will shoot you into a vent in the corner to the right of the angled panels.

To unlock the “Final Transmission” Achievement or Trophy, hit the button on the weighted storage cube tube at the end of the level and let it dump out all its garbage. Look for a radio amongst it and bring the radio with you. Approach Rat Man’s drawings inside to unlock the achievement when you hear a coded transmission. You can decode it with the steps we’ve got on our Rat Man Transmissions page.

Den 4

Location: Chamber 12, Chapter 3

Includes: Pretty drawings

This one is accessible through portals, but you’ll need to use the Hard Light Bridge in order to see it. Look at the ceiling for a hole — that’s where you’re headed, among the ducts hidden behind the panels. In order to get there, get up on the Hard Light Bridge through normal means, then look up in through the hole in the ceiling. You should see a portal-accepting surface on the ceiling. Nail it with a portal and jump through to come out in a small room with another mural.

Den 5

Location: Chamber 16, Chapter 3

Includes: Mural showing GLaDOS turning on the Aperture scientists, Band of Turrets Easter egg

This chamber is filled with turrets, and the very first thing you’ll do as you enter the room is pass a turret behind a grille. You can only dodge it at the moment. Solve the puzzle as you usually would, using the laser beam and portals to kill the three turrets nearby and get the cubes. Using the storage cube to hold down the button and portals to redirect the beam, hold the cube with the lens in it to fire the laser at the turret behind the grate to blow it open. Go inside and you’ll see the Band of Turrets Easter egg, and find the den just beyond.

Den 6

Location: Chamber 17, Chapter 3

Includes: A reference to Chell and the Lab Ratcomic

Standing on the Hard Light Bridge near where it comes out from the wall, above the archway leading toward the exit. There’s a portal-accepting surface above that, so shoot it with a portal to send the bridge up there, as far left as you can. Then walk through the portal and stay on the bridge, and you should come across an open panel on your right. Sneak inside to find the last den, another mural and a bunch of interesting mugs scattered everywhere.

Rat Man Transmissions

The first signal is accessible when you snag the “Final Transmission” Achievement/Trophy. You’ll have to get to the Rat Man Den #3, the instructions to which are found in our Portal 2 Rat Man Dens post.

The second signal is accessible if you turn on Valve Developer Commentary and go to Rat Man Den #6. If you access the commentary node while you’re in the room, you’ll hear the second signal.

Decoding the Signal

What you’re hearing — bursts of sound that kind of sound like 56K modem noises — are called SSTV signals. If you record them, you can decode them with SSTV software you can find on the Internet. We used the freeware found here.

If you can manage to record the sound from the transmissions (I’m using my iPhone, which is in no way ideal, but it is quick and easy) off your TV, play the recording into the mic on your laptop, the software will decode the sound into images.

Try it yourself! Or check back when we get our own transmissions decoded!

Here’s the one from “Final Transmission,” care of the Valve forums:

Portal 2 Dev Console Cheats

Go to the Main Menu in the PC version of Portal 2, then hit Options: Keyboard and Mouse: Enable Developer’s Console. Done and done.

Now hit the ~ key whenever you want to open the console and you can input commands. Here are a few that seem to be the most useful:

    sv_cheats 1

– turns cheats on. You need to enter this one before any other commands.

    noclip

– Allows you to fly and walk through objects without being deterred by them.

    god

– Makes you invulnerable.

    thirdperson

– Switch the camera to third-person mode. It’s a little screwy, but also kind of cool.

You can also check out the full list of dev console commands for Valve’s Source engine here. They let you do a few other cool things, like turn beams to wireframes, close all portals, take screenshots, and more.

Portal 2 Endings

Finish the Portal 2 co-op campaign and unlock the “You Saved Science” Achievement. You’ll nab this through the normal course of playing the co-op campaign, so just keep plugging away with pals.

Derp. You can see these in Steam with two clicks. These are not cheats, these aren’t even secrets. Why would you waste people’s time with these?

Hey, Eagleon some people don’t have steam…

@Eagleon
It’s a process, dude. We have to actually, you know, FIND all this stuff first. The achievement listings are place-holders. We’re getting rundowns together on how to get all the tough ones as we speak. Check back for more on all that stuff later today.

If you grab the turret for the “No hard Feelings” trophy, listen to it for a few seconds, and it will start telling you about Caroline. Just a hint.

In Ratman den 5, if you move close to the turret line side of the opening you’ll see fat opera turret standing opposite them. In Ratman den 6, if you stand directly next to the painting in the hallway part of the room you’ll hear something muffled that sounds like a deranged person (which I only mention since it’s the only place I’ve found that sound effect).

Christi

On July 8, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Oh, and if you miss the monitor in Wheatley’s test chamber 6 by blocking yourself with the light bridge he’ll gloat for a moment that you missed him that time (but it only works if you’ve been smashing monitors to that point, and if you’re holding the turret-cube when you do it).

Nick

On August 12, 2011 at 7:29 pm

@Christi I heard muffled voices in den 3 as well. I’d like to know what theyre saying. But If you stand up to the ery left of the drawings you’ll hear it

Bombajrosh

I do not know if you missed it on purpose or just didn’t notice it: there is a very shy robot showing itself in the room 7 (chapter 2) at the beginning of the level.
