Portal 2 Wheatley Footage

Portal’s breezy puzzling and inventive, physics-based gameplay formed the core of the game‘s fun, but it was the off-kilter mania of AI advisor/adversary GLaDOS that really stuck with people. The sequel introduces a new monocular companion in the form of Wheatley, who joins forces with protagonist Chell as they embark on another orange- and blue-bordered peregrination through the Aperture Science labs.

The video below, rendered in stunning HD quality, acts as a formal introduction to British comic actor Stephen Merchant, who appears as the voice of Wheatley.  Keep your eyes peeled also for a look at some of Portal 2′s upgraded graphical bells and whistles, along with heretofore unrevealed footage of the bowels of Aperture.

He’s a rubbish voice-actor. Still, we’re all going to buy the new Portal game no matter what!

STFU UtopiaVI I like the voice acting, I find it hilarious, reminds me of the monthy python movies, so STFU and enjoy the damn sneak peak!

Nope, the voice is quite bad. Still isn’t enough to turn me away from the game.

Trailer was neat and all but, I didn’t see any portals

Thank god we have REAL professionals here to tell us if the voice acting sucks. I mean, a normal person like myself might not be able to tell the caliber of a character voice from a scant 3 minute clip, but we are clearly in the presence of those who can. Someday I hope to be as discerning. Were I to type such “to-the-point” and well calculated comments, I’d probably just appear glib and dismissive. So I guess congratulations are in order for being more vastly more relevant and important than strangers! I eagerly await your credentials, gentlemen.

for the record, the professor had it right, and secondly, i think his voice acting adds something that is not in most games. i think he sound great. 3rdly, they must have played the game already to talk so much , get me a copy you cynical judgmental griefers.

good thing GLaDOS sounds great to make up for it :)

Yay Stephen Merchant

On August 26, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Personally, I’ve always loved Stephen Merchant ever since I got into the show “Extras”, so I’m really glad he’s voice acting this, and I think he does a terrific job. But honestly, unless the voice acting is REALLY off or terrible, it’s not even a concern of mine. This is still going to be a great game no matter what you think of the voice acting.

Well… i love the graphics and everything and all… and i am pretty sure it will an AMMAZZINGLY good game… so i am pretty sure that they will put a different voice for it… if not it still of COURSE will be a awesome GAME

Ewww DeathStalker God forbid somebody have a ing opinion.

Stephen Merchant is THE WORST and is single-handedly ruining Portal 2 for me.

Josh Adams

On August 26, 2010 at 1:48 pm

If Merchant’s voice acting “ruins” Portal 2 for you, by all means please don’t play it. The rest of us will be having a great time without you. Now off.

agreed. the voice acting of the floating bot sucks hard enough to be distracting.

Stephen Merchant is the best thing to happen to gaming this side of 2010.

TempleDog

On August 26, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Merchant’s delivery is great and his timing is as well. I think the issue everybody here’s got is that it doesn’t sound like a bot (a.k.a. like GLADos). It just sounds like some genial English dude talking over your shoulder. Hopefully, the guys at Valve will work a lil’ sound magic to make him sound all robotic n’ shiz. But as to his performance? No issue, sounds fine, mate.

Voice acting is a huge let down.

First portal had a deadpan robotic voice giving you hilariously ironic and twisted lines.

This just sounds like someone’s younger brother is sitting beside you while you play the game making half-ass lame jokes.

343 Guilty Spark anyone?

I like how no one likes the voice over for a game NO ONE has played yet.. Good job dummies..

GJ

On August 27, 2010 at 2:48 am

They should have hired Ricky Gervais for this.

Lewis

On August 27, 2010 at 2:53 am

GlaDOS sounds like a whiney American. Whereas Wheatley is voiced by Steven Merchant, who is actually a funny man in his own right regardless of what he’s done with Ricky Gervais. His voice makes me laugh!

Brian

It’s not like you wouldn’t get used to the voice jeez…

Mandingo

On August 27, 2010 at 7:20 am

His voice is far better than the one used in the earlier demo video issued back in June: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mPvEcKjL3M

Sounds good! sounds a lot better than the old voice in the first presentation. :)

Love the actor, but not in this role. I hope they do something to fix that before release.

Zamzy

On August 27, 2010 at 10:41 pm

never really seen much of the actor, so wasnt too familiar with his work, but I thought it sounded great for the floating bot with a flashlight. The bit about turning the light on cracked me up!
It fits for the game, I’m sure valve knows best for the game, it will be awesome either way.

The real problem here is that the juxtaposition doesn’t make sense. GLaDOS sounds robotic, which makes sense because she’s a robot, and doesn’t have human vocal cords or a lifetime of human experience. This new Stephen Merchant guy just sounds like….himself. 100% human, not even the tiniest bit robotic except for his unlikely approach to password cracking. How can you put these two in the same game and call it continuity?

I like the old horrible british voice actor better lol

the voice acting is AMAZING its stephen merchant. if you lissen to the rickey gervais pod casts you will LOVE THIS. i am so happy that he is doing this im a massive fan of his!

Barg

On August 30, 2010 at 4:00 pm

I don’t understand, his voice is fine… I’ve heard alot of ty voice acting, and I have no problem with him at all. Did everyone just see one comment flaming him then jump aboard the bandwagon?

Leanne

On August 31, 2010 at 1:35 am

Anyone who thinks Stephen Merchants’ voice will ruin the game for them might as well not play it. I’d rather them do that then constantly ing about it when it’s released. “Oh, the voice acting sucks” Stfu before GLaDOS kicks your ass.

Davey

On August 31, 2010 at 4:02 pm

To be honest I’d rather it was auto-tuned to hell like GLaDOS, it doesn’t seem… Artificial enough!
And I wish he didn’t interrupt when GLaDOS was talking, I love her mini speech there. x)

Adamrg

On September 7, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Keep in mind this is based “several hundred years” after the first portal… after GLaDOS. This robot is would likely be a ‘bit’ more advanced wouldn’t you think?

Christ, if a Ford in ‘several hundred years’ sounded liked GLaDOS still I’m going to live in a cave and f’ evolution.

Well, it’s not BAD, but I strongly preferred the other guy who did Wheatley’s voice originally. I thought he came off much funnier.
