Possibility of Final Fantasy VII Remake Surfaces Again

ffviicover1-1.jpgIt’s almost a regular thing these days to have a random person at Square-Enix tease gamers with the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake every so often. This time it’s the director of FFVII: Crisis Core, Hajime Tabata, who had this to say in a recent interview:

“The possiblity for a remake may become greater if, for instance, the schedules of the original members of the Final Fantasy VII development team, such as Kitase and Nomura, open up”

So basically, if some of the original team members’ schedules open up, then the possibility of a remake gets greater. Call me a cynic, but to me that’s the same as saying the possibility of winning the lottery gets greater after you buy a ticket.

Unfortunately, what you’re saying is true.

Nevertheless, it would be absolutely fantastic to play this game once again with today’s graphics…

Dreams, dreams, dreams… ;)

These bastards should have never made this trailer, how could they tease us like that.

It would be the biggest mistake that company could ever make if they made a remake now. They should keep making all these little cash-ins on the name until the technology gets to the same level as that little cgi film spinoff they did awhile back. Then by all means make the silly thing!!

On February 6, 2008 at 6:24 am

Sorry HQ but i dont agree with you one bit, if you are a true FF fan you will buy the game up to todays graphics, if its made again in even better graphics you will that too, If its going towards any FF games i will pay them over and over again to help them create more, they have finally gone back to the old ways of FF and they are getting better everytime. so once again, if u were a true FF fan then you wouldnt care if they made a remake now and then again later.

On February 6, 2008 at 6:45 am

If you’re a true fan, you appreciate what was once fine art and then leave it at that and look forward to encouraging them to make better things rather than resigning themselves to games that will never be as good as 7.

I used to like Final Fantasy, but, I’ve grown tired of it. 7 and 9 were good games, but I’ve come to realise that they’re by no means the God-send I thought they were.

Please god, no. a FF7 remake would be really damn stupid. I agree with Joelteon7 and HQ. If you are a true FF fan, you’d appreciate the even older games who don’t get the fanbase it deserves way more than FF7, like FF4(waiting for DS remake), FF6, or even FFT. FF7 gets ENOUGH crap to go along with it. If they remade 7 or made ANOTHER spinoff of seven like DoC or Advent Children, then it’s kinda saying that’s their only hope of getting money.

No remake, please.

Worse idea ever, every one remembers Final Fantasy 7 a different way, and if they were to remake it, every one would hate it because it wouldn’t live up to their standards.

The only possible way of creating a remake that would be acceptable by everyone is to make the game exactly the same, and improve only the graphics and effects. The game’s storyline was perfect, as most agree, and any change to the script would only worsen the effect, and possibly send fans jumping out of windows…
If they did make a remake like that, I, for one, would buy it on it’s first day out. Even though I know the storyline and outcome, it would still be totally awesome to play it with Advent Children graphics :P .
Oh, and HQ, the technology IS at that level – that “trailer” was a demonstration of the PS3′s graphics engine (and that was even before it was out), so with a little (sarcasm here) work they could remake the entire game like that.

“Remake, please, and make it genuine”

To not make a FF 7 remake now would be a huge mistake for Sony and Square. There’s obviously plenty of demand for it. It would probably be one of the top ten selling games of the year.

Joelteon7

On February 6, 2008 at 11:55 am

That’s the thing though. Sure it will sell, but how can we push forward for new and innovating gaming when we’re getting something that is only a decade old? I want something new and fresh to hit me in the face and scream ‘Buy me!’. Re-iterating a game so soon isn’t going to help the industry.

I just hope they make another final fantasy that can put such an inpact on the people who play it, that they’ll be begging them to remake it ten or so years after its release..but some would say don`t touch the paintings! in a museum yo.. so it realy does depend on how you look at it Final Fantasy # Forever (any&all FF’s) and yes im a true fan..

I agree with HQ !! (I think?) FF13 will be the next FF7! the others were great but FF7 was my first! lol Until then I had only played fighting games. actully I thought IT was a fighting game because of that big ass sword cloud had on the cover! lol anyway I also hope they make another FF like my first! I’d buy a remake too !hot! !Tifa!

I think they should remake it for the people that didn’t get to play it the first time around! If square re-releases it with the same old block head graphics they’ll make the new kids jump out their windows onto the bloody concrete (with spikes even) lets face it FF7 hasn’t aged gracefuly. we demand a remake, for the new kids and the old kids to enjoy!!!! :!:

First, there is statistics in an interview with SE and they said, “it would take a team of 300 people and around $60 to make. We would also have to cancel all of our other titles.” So it will be a while before it comes out but it will happen. SE will make 3x the cost of making the game in the first weekend. There should be a remake because there are a lot of kids that i personally know that want to experience what i experienced when i first played ffvi. they cant do that because they cannot get past the graphics. if there was a remake then SE would have 100′s of thousands of people to add to their fanbase and a lot of them will buy other titles. so basically what im saying is, there WILL be a remake but not for a long time. the original game developers have to have “open” schedules to work on this together. if the next ffvi is kept exactly the same but will today’s graphics then there is no possible way of a failure. Whut I think would be the most wonderous thing in the world would be if Square would tell us they wernt gonna make FFVII for PS3, and then pull a quick one on us and really do it!!!!!!!

Imagine walking into a game store and just seeing FFVII for Preorder!!!!

AAAGGHHHH!!!! I think Jesus would come back and end the world early just to play that game!!!!!

I think FF7 would be an awesome game to remake, there is no reason why not, if you are a fan of the original and think that “real fans” should be satisfied with the original then dont play the new one, you shouldnt care if ppl dont like the remake but there will be people who would LOVE to see it happen if you are a true fan then even a bad remake wont make you stop loving the original FF7, so get over it and… REMAKE FF7, i would love to see it happen

Dudes and dudets, new games are fun but they always make new games. Theres nothing more exilerating than seeing something old and badass take the stage once more. It would be the last 7 they would have to make. Think of it this way, if Square had the technology then that we have now dont you think they would have made it that good? They couldnt though but still tried to make it the best that they could in its time. AFter playing Crisis Core and seeing the movie like plot line I had a hard on to see the same thing continue in 7 but to no avail I was a little bummed to go back to hands that looked like blocks and expressionless faces that steal that jaw dropping and thumb throbbing effect to see the outcome. 7 was great for its time but why not have both just to say you have the old one and save that as a relic that sits on the throne of its reputation in your house that screams “this remake would have been nothing without me”. I thnk they should atleast fill in the gap between CC and AC and make the whole thing into one hard pack series. It wouldnt hurt Square since they would be practically getting masturbated on with even more money to make the next link in the grand chain of Final fantasys on going legacy. If you say its foolish, then you think AC and CC are foolish, they should have made them with the same graphics of the 90′s but they didn’t. I think they owe it to their fans and to themselves to atleast bridge the time gap but thats just me.

On May 9, 2008 at 7:48 am

I agree with Handeo. If they do decide to make a remake, they need to keep the storyline exactly as it was. It wouldnt hurt to add a little here and there to show us things of the story that werent show in the first creation, as long as it does not alter with anything in the original story. I think we all agree that the story is what made this game an automatic classic, not the boxie graphics. If we could relive this wonderful story with todays graphics, I think every FF fan will be extremely grateful even if they dont agree with the remake. All they need is to use todays graphics, keep the same battle engine, and different camera angles for all cutscenes and battle sequences. I think its a wonderful idea. I vote REMAKE!!

It would help, Square, and Sony at the same time. As I speak Ps3 is not doing to good, from what I hear. I personaly love the Ps3 I think it’s a great system I like it beter than the X-box 360. But to remake FF7 would help both Sony, and Sqaure in the long run. As for final fantasy 13 looks good and all, but after playing Final Fantasy 12 I did not like it at all, it has a great storyline and but gameplay heh.. Anyway, Remaking ff7 it would be great as long as they keep the storyline and other things.

On May 10, 2008 at 3:14 am

Final Fantasy VII Director Yoshinori Kitase recently touched on the possibility of remaking the RPG classic for the PlayStation 3, stating that fans could “expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point.”

Kitase commented that if a remake were to transpire, it would have to include all of the core team members from the original 1997 PlayStation classic; something which isn’t possible right now due each individual’s commitments to other projects.

“My feelings are that if a remake were to work well then all the core members of the original team must be reassembled, all the artists and designers,” said Kitase.

“The problem is that, although all of us have an idea of what a remake should be and how to do it, organising such a thing right now is logistically very difficult. All the different members are now involved in very new, very large projects like Final Fantasy XIII and those projects are going to take a while.”

Despite this, he refused to completely rule out the chances of a remake on PS3, adding, “Maybe, when all those games are finished then we can look at doing something like that.”

”Of course, that said we came up with the idea for Crisis Core in just two days. It was a case of ‘this is what we want to do, so let’s do it’. So, you can definitely expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point, but it’s hard to predict.”

Stay tuned for further developments as they break.

So they say.

ok so… ive pretty much read all the anti-ff7 remake replies and i have to say WTF. Its not like theyre gonna change the storyline, theyre not gonna change the characters, the plot, nothing, all theyre gonna do is make the SAME game, with insane graphics for the ps3. Your arguments that “the game wont live up to ‘real ff7 fans’ expectations” is a crock of . The only reason that theyre CONSIDERING MAKING a remake is because there’s MILLIONS of “real ff7 fans” asking for it. My own personal opinion is that the game was made before it was due. If it wouldve come out now with today’s graphics it wouldve been THAT much better because of the graphics enhancement from back in the day. There wouldn’t be all these stupid arguments that the game wouldn’t live up to YOUR expectations. All we would have is the game of the century with REALLY good graphics, and i’m sure you ppl wouldn’t be complaining. Just the fact that there’s so many ppl asking for a remake is saying that it’s probably one of the best things SE could do. They would make ALOT of money off of it because so many ppl would buy it, and if they dont already have it, the ps3 as well. I’m personally one person who would. And i know ALOT of ppl that would do the same. So you whiners who have “expections” just stick a can in it and don’t try and convince them otherwise.

I’m down for a remake. I still create new files and play Final Fantasy VII on the regular, but making a remake would really show the PS3′s true power. But all in all, I would probably play the old one much more than the new one if it ever comes out. Of course the only aspect that would interest me are the graphics, but maybe if they made a continuation to the story.. that would be rad.

Vincent

On May 17, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Ok at the end of Crisis core after the credits it said “To be continued in Final Fantasy VII” that could mean two things, they meant to be continued in the original FF VII or they are making a remake. I think they are making the remake because why would they bother putting that in after the credits to say to be continued. People wouldn’t watch the credits if it was just saying play the original again. And they would make absolutely no money off of that to be continued. FF VII’s original copy is hard to come by and none of the money would go to them because it would prolly be on eBay or something. Just a passing thought

Vincent

On May 17, 2008 at 12:12 pm

oh and to all of the people against the remake, i know remakes are never really better then the original, and nothing will be better then the original FF VII, but that doesn’t mean that its not gonna be good. And if you don’t like it, don’t play it.

Ok look guys I found out they are doing a remake for Final Fantasy VII 4 the PS3 system. So stop complaining U sound like a bounch of girls no offense. Besides the characters will actually talk like in Advent Children which was I think a great film! Besides that film was made to basically apologize for making final fantasy spirits within that was a waste of time and money. It had no plot line at all I was bored to tears  ! So I’m sorry if I just burst someones bubble but Final Fantasy VII will be coming to the PS3 system the special movie at the end of Crisis Core was not a teaser it was from what they’ve completed so far for the remake! So um yeah  I also agree with what Vincent said 2 if U don’t like it don’t play it and stop complaining! Thanx

On July 5, 2008 at 2:39 am

My God you guys.

Yes, the original FFVII was wonderful. But it wasn’t the graphics or the game system that made the game so great–it was the story.

Revamping the graphics and adding voices to characters won’t desecrate the plotline. In fact, I’d be glad if they added in some new side quests. But that won’t change what happens in the game.

If they don’t make a remake, then appreciate the original. If they do a remake, then appreciate it for the story, not the shiny new graphics.

All of these remarks are very controversial. And can both be respected legends can’t be born again because its the way it is. However…some legends are just too precious to be left in the wind without grabbing onto its awsome potential.

I however choose that the Final Fantasy 7 original members choose in there hearts what they think is right because it is there game, but they also have to understand how huge of an impact it has made fans in America and how many PS3′s would be sold in one day of the release of FF7 for the PS3. How much money would go in there pockets. Billions possibly..

When i watched the CG cinematic movie graphics on games titles such as Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core and watching Advent Children. I was utterly astonished by its beauty, lucious realistic graphics and overall dramatic presentation that made you want to believe in this legendary story.

The original Final Fantasy 7 had remarkible characters, and storyline, and back in the day lego-block-shaped graphics was all that playstation had at the time and you still greatly appreciated it. But look at the technology that the Japanese have now…its magnificent.

Think of Cloud and the whole gang in this world as realistic as it could get, with so much potential to be worked on battle-systems, controls, storyline, sidequests the possibilities are endless at this point…

If this legend was remade it would be the last time this legend had to set foot on a game console because it would please, and absolutley amaze all of the Final Fantasy fans and enjoy every bit of game play and heavily enjoy the amazing cinematic movies that are so emotional and dramatic.

I want a remake. I`ve tried to get several of my friends, including my younger two brothers to play FFVII, cos its an awesome game, but they cannot get past the graphics, and thats a shame cos tis an awesome game.

If they do a remake though, KEEP THE CHOCOBOS. I want to be able to breed them like in FFVII, not the ty sort of breeding like in FF X-2 where I couldnt even NAME my own chocobos :( and the racing in FFVII was awesome. All these smaller side events in FFVII is what helps making it epic. The storyline too, sure, but without many of those small parts it wouldnt be as great. So if they remake it, please keep the same chocobo breeding and racing, and the dating scene at golden saucer. Having voices to the characters made me cringe for a little while and i thought of FFX which sometimes made me feel awkward, but if they manage to make the voiceovers better than in FFX im up for it in the remake too.

so if they remake it, please do not take away;
- the whole catching, breeding, racing chocobos thing.
- W-item materia! oh i had plenty fun with that one
- Knights of round materia! imagine that one, in todays graphics!
- dating at gold saucer, fun to see who you get
- epic comments from the characters like;
“Lets mosey” – Cloud
“Lard!! more lard!” – Palmer,
“oh grossness!” – Yuffie,
“Dont step on the flowers” – Reno, etc.

dont know if anyone agrees….but that trailer they made….do you think they would spend all that time and money making it for no reason? and they would have to know what kind of uproar it would cause….this is a tease for what is to come of the game im almost sure of it….they had plenty of other games to show off grafix if thats all they wanted to do….Killzone 2 for instance…amazing looking demo trailer…..I will remain hopefull for the remake.

I want a remake of ff7 but ONLY IF they increase the difficulty. I recently bought the pc version and its possible to beat the entire game without much trouble playing a solo character challenge with no offensive magic or summons and with halfing his HP and all stats with an editor.

vanilla ff7 was challenging back when i first played at at age 13 (im 21 now) but nowadays its so easy you could beat it with just one character, thats underleveled, and doesnt use any magic or summons.

if they create a remake and its the same difficulty or doesnt have multiple difficulty modes i will be very unhappy. just simply upgrading the graphics isnt good enough in my opinion. leave the story and core of the game the same but update the graphics, fix all bugs (like magic defense on armours not doing anything) BALANCE the game so that i cant beat it with just simply holding down the action button then i will be satisfied and will gladly shell out ANY amount of money square asks for.

and maybe add a few more enemies, bosses, sidequests, all i really care about is balance though, so that all random encounters and all bosses are a bit of a challenge for the level that your at, at that point

I hope this new remake is MADE sometime soon, I’m playing the original FF7 as I type this…I absolutely loved the side quests, Ruby,Emerald…and rare stuff like quadra magic, knights of the round, gold chocobos, master magic, master summon I like the challenging quests anything that is like near impossible to beat but is still beatable…example ruby is by far the hardest…but with the right combinations of materia like final attack with phoenix = pretty powerful. If the new one is made for ps3 i hope they include some stuff from the others like, break hp/mp limit, playable summons like ffx, maybe include anima, he was kooz. In the end i liked how ff7 used everything they could think of as in buggys, tiny bronco, highwind. I liked flying around that was one of the best things next to the submarine… enough of my ranting i loved this game and will prolly play it over and over until my cd’s no longer work~!

FF7 > FFX > FFXI >FF9

Those are the only FF’s I played, I liked em all.

If they remade FF7 for the PS3 I would be made up for years. The original gave me endless fun and having just completed Crisis Core I’ve begun to play the original again. Despite the graphics it is every bit as good as i remember.
In my opinion, no other FF has lived up to FF7, even the earlier ones, helped mainly by the materia system and side quests (Master Magic/Command/Summon, Chocobo Breeding, etc.) On the other hand, the quality of Crisis Core and Advent Children have added greatly to the story of FF7 and done it justice. To not make a remake of Final Fantasy 7 after the clip at the end of Crisis Core and the released video Demo would be stupid due to the hype they’ve created.
I would like to see Materia Fusion from Crisis Core used which could lead to break Hp/Mp limit and damage limit but i would most like to see the difficulty increased as it was considerably easy with the correct materia combinations. Agreeing with Tyler_Wu I would like to see more balance against enemies other than weapons as they are supposed to be hard.
Having playable summons would completely spoil it as your using materia and controlling the summons was not part of the game play. In FFX, the summoner borrowed the power of the summon and therefore it was used by consent but with materia your stealing the power of the summon.
The equiping of Materia to weapons and armor should stay along with all the ways of using the materia with the added Materia Fusion and all the original Side Quests and possibly including Missions for Avalanche similarly to those Zack did for Soldier.
FF7 rocks guys, nomatter what anyone says and a remake of FF7 would do everyone good.

FiNAL FANTASY VII coming soon to screen near you. If they were to announced it was coming I believe the net would overload and crash from all the fans trying to get the very first screens. Of course a sequel to crisis core and DoC is planed. If you’ve played either you know what im talking about so that may be the only way of seeing Cloud and the gang on our PS3s. Kingdom hearts 3 doesn’t really count.

I want a remake so bad as I see FFVIII as the last great FF game. FFX was only really good because it was the first FF to have talking. The BIGGEST fear I have for a FFVII remake would be that they would make it in the same shadow of the more recent games e.g. FFXII. I’m happy to play the old game just the way it was BUT to have the old game remade with just better graphics and voice overs would be great as long as they don’t change any of the game play. Still in my mind the best FF game ever.

Mr Hope

On August 18, 2008 at 5:13 am

I’m amazed by the rift this topic is causing between so called fans. I think what it boils down to is what kind of a re-make it will be. I agree FF7 was something very special and set the bar for an era of RPG’s and im sure holds a very special place in the hearts of all who played it aswell as those who were involved in its development. Like all art, time does it no favors and like all art i think restoration is a necessity to restore it to its former glory so that a new generation can continue to appreciate it and an older generation can re-live its magic. In any case i don’t think this should be an argument, if SE makes any move to re-make this legend then it is a great service to us fans and wouldn’t even be considered if we didn’t love this game so much.
The reality of such a re-make is still slim and at best a very long way away from fruition, But a little dreaming and hoping never hurt anyone

Mr Hope

On August 18, 2008 at 5:21 am

Also can anyone imagine how mammoth a task a re-make would be? FF7 was so in depth with a huge variety of side quests and monsters the likes of which have been missed in newer titles because its very very difficult to keep the quality and game play on par. A re-make of this game is a huge undertaking and commitment by even SE’s standards.

all i want in life is to relive the feelings playing ff7. imagine the raw power and excitement of the shinra building when you see the streaks of blood from the jenova tank, or the fear you had at the very presence of sephiroth, the way you felt seeing aerith die all pushed to the limit by todays graphics and sound. i cant count how many times i have played ff7 just to see the story unfold again and again. and some of you are saying those moments arent worth remaking? you must have your head up your ass

The special ending in Crisis Core says “to be continued in FFVII” and in case nobody realized this “to be” means future, or soon to be. Which doesn’t make since b/c FFVII already exists … DAMN YOU SQUARE! YOU WILL DO THIS REMAKE!

as todays and future standards of games grows, and disc space becomes more and more, considering final fantasy 7 was on 3 discs on play station 1, what they could possibly do is recreate the multiple disc game BUT extend it, 3 discs, alot more story line and alot of happy gamers. i just hate it when i complete an RPG and want to play it further and further with more storys and things to do. ff7 did end rather plain and bland with cloud defeat sephiroth but they could bring in the movie advent children and add that into the game as the 3-4 disc remake.

any comments?

I have been hoping for a remake of number FF7 jus for the graphic update’s but still we need new final fantasy games and i think games will be great if they bring back MATERIA thats one thing i really liked about 7 and alson more games where characters have enemys like sephiroth who has to be the greatest video game bad guy of all time!!!
