PS3 1.80 Update Coming Tomorrow

ps3-overhead.jpg

PS3 owners will receive a minor update to the system, but an update DVD connoisseurs will truly appreciate. The most notable update in firmware version 1.80 will allow for DVD upscaling up to 1080p over HDMI and also PS1/PS2 games upscaling over component and HDMI cables.

Also in this update is the “Remote Play” ability, where PSP owners can access the contents of their PS3 anywhere in the world as long as they’re connected to a broadband connection.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION&reg3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation&reg and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3′s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3′s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3′s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

Notes

1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

3. DLNA â$” Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

Get with the times man, component was sooooo 2006… god, I sound like such a douche

It is because they would be under scrutiny since you can’t upscale signals over an analog line(they are afraid of content theft). Yes their has been products that upscale though component but usually under the radar and Sony most likely doesn’t want to deal with that heat.

Sucks for me because by Sony 34XBR800 with DVI input will not show a picture via HDMI to DVI and I’ve tried everything. So I’m using Component and am not buying a new set! My PS3 does work via HDMI with my bedroom 32″ Vizio, but that’s not where the Home Theater is…..Sony….give us upscaling via Component too!!!!!!!!

What worked for me, finally, was doing a hard reset (power button on the back of the PS3). Things that didn’t help include: regular reboots, resetting the system after crashes, and “just trying over and over”. It worked the first time after the hard reset. My PS3 is connected via Ethernet. It would appear that the system maintains some bad network state through soft-boots and crashes.

I too got the error code 8002F994. I temporarily disable my firewall settings in my router and the update went through fine.

    On July 22, 2007 at 9:51 pm

I got a PS3 today, and hit the 8002F994 error twice, about 43% through the download.

I then manually downloaded via browser per these instructions:

    http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/pc_update.html#update_PC

And it died about %60 of the way through. I re-started and continued that download, then copied the firmware update to a compact flash card (per above link directions) and then used that to update from (it copies from the usb storage to the hard drive, and then updates from that).

Note the update is 100Mb … so it takes a while to download.
