We had gotten wind that the big 2.4 update was right around the corner, but the word is now official: firmware version 2.40 will be released this Wednesday, July 2nd. Included in the update will of course be in-game XMB, which is certainly the biggest part of the update. Additionally, Trophies (think Xbox 360 Achievements) will be added to the PS3, with the first game to take advantage of it being a personal favorite of mine, Super Stardust HD.
The video above showcases in-game XMB, including the ability to check your friends list and send messages while playing a game, keep tabs on your downloads and see how they’re coming along, boot up a new game from your hard drive without having to go back to the XMB, browse thumbnails of your photos (you’ll need to leave your game in order to see them full screen or view a slideshow), and play your own music while playing a game.
Only being able to look at thumbnails of your photos seems like a pretty minor thing; while I can’t really think of a situation where I’d want to do it, I don’t even know why Sony bothered including it.
Nevertheless, the update will be here on Wednesday via a system update, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

Imagine you are playing a game then you want to view a file. Previously you would have had to press the PS button and choose quit which would then bring you to the XMB where you can navigate to the file. With this you just bring up the XMB and go to it from there. It just makes navigation around the system a bit quicker. They didn’t do this specifically for photos obviously, they did it for every single file on the system. If you want to switch from playing one game to another or start watching a film you can just go to it from the in game XMB without having to quit first.

Awesome, I can’t wait .. i’ve been dying to have this feature since i got my ps3. There’s been so many times that i’ve received a message and i had to quit the game i was playing.
Are there any videos out there that show off the trophy system yet? I’m still not 100% sure what that is all about. Does it just show games you have completed, or what?

Sorry to say this, but MICROSOFT: YOU CAN SUCK MY BALLS.
Now finally there is nothing better about the 360 than ps3.
That is the one selection of features I have remained envious over.
I hate most of the music on tony hawks but love the game. Now I can listen to my own favourite genre and FINALLY when some idiot keeps messaging you while your playing a game you don’t have to quit.
GOD I can’t wait for tomorrow.
Took its time though didn’t it…
