PS4 Eclipses Lifetime Wii U UK Sales In One Weekend
While us ‘muricans were eating turkey and watching The Abomination of Rugby this holiday weekend, Sony’s PS4 console launched in the UK.
According to Eurogamer and UK sales watcher Chart-Track say Sony sold 250,000 PS4s in 48 hours, which would put the console well in the lead over the Xbox One and Wii U in that region. Microsoft has reportedly sold 170,000 Xbox One consoles in the two weeks since launch (and 150,000 of those were sold in the first 48 hours), which would put the PS4 in a pretty dominating position this holiday. Meanwhile, both the Xbox One and PS4 have eclipsed Nintendo’s lifetime UK Wii U sales figures in a matter of weeks and/or days, although a strong showing is expected from the Wii U this holiday season.
Sony is also keen on the PS4 launch window operating as smoothly as possible, and apparently has reserved stock on-hand to replace any launch consoles that might fail in the opening weeks.
From Sony UK boss Fergal Gara:
“…the failure rate on PS4 is well within the region we see on PS3, which is considered a pretty bullet-proof machine. There is no evidence there to cause panic either for us or for gamers having any lack of confidence in picking up a PS4.”
“One thing we’ve done within our stock allocation is make sure we’ve got a pool of stock to deal with any ‘dead on arrival’ issues.”
“It’s not a vast volume, because there’s no evidence to suggest we need a vast volume to deal with that. But our consumer services helpline is there to support gamers and solve any problems that do emerge.”
