PSA: It’s a Free Nuclear Dawn Weekend on Steam

Your weekend deal this week on Steam is Nuclear Dawn; it’ll run you $11.99 until Monday. Oh, and it’s free until Sunday.

That’s right; it’s another free weekend from Steam, this time for the FPS/RTS that wants oh so badly to steal our hearts by being a mostly unique game. And now you can give it the chance to do just that without even spending a dime. Have at it, bros.

At first I was like, “this is kinda good, but why won’t more people play this game”? But then it becomes obvious. IT’S NOT VERY UNIQUE! It reminds me a lot of BF2 or ET/Quakewars without air support. And its not a current crowd drawing CODMW or BF3, not that I want that, but many sheeple do.

It’s a rather “been there done that” type of feel for me. The maps and environments are nice, the Source engine is great, and in some matches I had some fun. But right now its mostly lone-wolf MW3 types getting their rocks off, that won’t squad up or play the objectives. (thanks cod) Most of the matches I played were also team stacked, because the auto balance is a joke. Its really hard to believe that InterWave belives that being on a losing team and forced into your spawn and raped until the bitter end with turret guns, rockets and grenade launcher spam is considered fun, and competitive game-play.

I also tried the commander RTS side, I couldn’t get into it. You can place your resources, but you really have no actual control over the lone-wolfs to help take the objectives out and move forward, and you are more than likely voted out of your commander seat by a Mutiny vote anyway.

It seems its a very small community played this game pre-weekend, and the numbers playing were falling off. The majority of servers now being hosted for this event are sever rentals companies just trying cash in on renting out some servers slots.

Respect to InterWave Studios for the dedication of staying on top of their PC exclusive with the support and patches since its release in September, and good luck with any planed release on the Xbox, but unfortunately this game is not for me at even 40% off and 10hrs later of playing it, trying to justify it as something I have to have.
