PSA: New Payday: The Heist Content Not A L4D Prequel
When the new content for Payday: The Heist was announced, many people shouted “hip hip hooray!” like characters from a penny dreadful Victorian novel, mainly because the copy associated with the new content stated that it put the events of Payday: The Heist into continuity with Valve’s Left 4 Dead series. “Have you ever wondered how the Left 4 Dead series began?”, copy tagged in the announcement trailer asked. “It started with a heist!”
This would seemed to have indicated that Valve was outsourcing the origins of their Left 4 Dead series to Overkill. It didn’t help that sources within Payday developer Overkill said outright that they were indeed working on a blend of the two franchises. Alas, it ain’t so. Valve’s Chet Faliszek has poured water on those statements, clarifying that the setting of the new content – the No Mercy Hospital confirmed to be ground zero for the L4D series’ zombie plague – is merely a shout out, not an official blending of the two franchises. Statements to the contrary are “just by some over-excited marketing guys.”
So now you know. If we ever get a real L4D prequel, it won’t be a Payday sequel.
