Psi-Ops Available for Free on Filefront

Some people may disagree, but I loved Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (cheesy name, aside). I even wrote an article awhile back outlining how awesome a sequel to it could be. Well now, anyone can experience Midway’s psychic shooter for the low, low price of absolutely nothing. Filefront now has the full game ready for anyone to download from their website.

The game has you playing as a psychically-enhanced soldier trying to take down a terrorist organization. Yeah, the story is pretty negligible, but the action is solid. The game grants you several psychic abilities — telekinesis, pyrokinesis, mind control, etc. — which are more useful than your guns in dispatching enemies. This game actually does “Force powers” better than any Star Wars game to date, unless The Force Unleashed delivers on its promises. Plus, this is made by the same team who worked on John Woo’s Stranglehold.

To snag the full Psi-Ops game for yourself, just click the links below to download the four parts of the game.

There are some important caveats about this free version of the game which should be disclosed but aren’t by any of the websites like Filefront which are distributing it. First, this release of the game has Double Fusion’s advertising and tracking software embedded in it. Second, even though this is a single-player game, it always requires an active Internet connection to play. There is no offline play. Third, the game can’t be played from just any country (IP address). I’m not certain if it is just limited to U.S. IP addresses or not, but there is an error message screen that notes that the game isn’t playable in some countries. Finally, the ability to play this game may be terminated at some point in the future by the publisher. Similar free games supported by the same advertising and activation scheme released in the recent past have already had their “plugs pulled.” So if you want to play the game, do it soon.

For some reason everything has worked fine so far with the exception that none of the cutscenes will activate. I have no idea what exactly is going on in the story other than what is disclosed during actual gameplay. Anyone have any idea what workaround there might be?

Just goes to show you, nothing is free. I also find it interesting they dont tell you about this before you download it. I think I will buy from direct 2 drive for $15 and keep my piece of mind.
