Pwnage (TM); Are They Serious?

It seems like the thing to do these days is apply for trademarks on commonly used words and phrases for financial gain. The latest scheme is Finnish software company Futuremark Game Studio who recently filed papers to protect the trademark “pwnage”. It’s becoming absurd that so many companies try to claim credit for things they didn’t even create themselves. Something tells me they will get away with it though. Something also tells me that anytime you use the word “pwnage” from now on, you might as well send a check for a dollar to Futuremark.

I’m sure someone will try to trademark the word “word” one day.

It means that you “can’t” use it in commercial way. Maybe they are making a game named like that? Sounds lame though…

“do the scum even have games? electricity?” Better than in the US.
Oh and Futuremark is the developer of 3DMark series.
I didn’t find anything about “pwnage” from Futuremark’s website. I also find this trademarking really weird as I don’t think you can do that, at least not in Finland, maybe in the US.

@ Jon
Have you ever heard of Nokia?
In all seriousness why shouldn’t they trademark pwnage if no one else has? They arent trademarking it to get royalties for its usage AFAIK they are trademarking it to use as the name of their new video games range.

Just to clarify, all it would mean is that no one else would be able to release games under the name of pwnage. There is absolutely no difference to this and a company like Nike, Shell or Converse. They didnt invent those words but they trademarked them to use as their names in their respective industry’s.
