R.I.P. Crysis 1 and 2 Multi-Player On PC

Once GameSpy shuts down its multi-player servers on May 31 say goodbye to multi-player gaming in Crysis One and Two.

Earlier this month it was announced that the parent company of GameSpy [Glu] will shut down all services hosted by GameSpy. This change had a major impact on the eight-hundred developers and publishers that still utilized these services for the multi-player functionality of their games.

Many communities which still play these games were waiting with baited breath for any announcement from the developers of their respective games to let them know what will happen post-shutdown. Electronic Arts has already confirmed that the Battlefield games (specifically Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Bad Company 2) will continue to thrive on new servers.

Crytek, on the other hand, has decided to cut-the-cord and simply cease support for Crysis One and Two multi-player gaming. At least on the PC, anyway. “The single-player campaigns in both games are unaffected by this transition, and the multiplayer mode in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation┬«3 versions of Crysis 2 remain playable.” stated by Cry-Tom on the official forums. “We’d like to thank everyone who has taken up arms in Crysis and Crysis 2′s multiplayer modes in the last few years, and apologize to the small but dedicated community of PC players who are still actively competing against one another.”

Though it seems that many may not be affected by this news if this thread from IGN is any indication.

Quake and Hexen aren’t affected. They use their own master servers.

Ed Boon and Netherealm STILL won’t comment!

And I know MK vs DCU will probably die too

Yet another damning indictment of the “cloud”. Lock yourself into a proprietary system at your own risk, and the risk of your business if you’re a developer.
