And the receiver wasn’t too expensive, I think he spent about 350$ on that. But then again, expensive is a relative term…

Not too much of an audiophile myself, but it would be worth a trip to your local stereo store for a small demo. Just ask a salesman when he has a slow day if he can show you the difference. Even us non-trained guys can hear some difference between the two. The decision is how much of a difference are you willing/able to pay for ? I know my inexpensive Sony receiver with 6.1 and mix-and-match speaker sytem, including 90$ dollar Radio-Shack sub-woofer are just fine for gaming in the basement on my 360. My brother-in-law spent $1600 on speakers alone, and the difference is substantial. But he had to wait another 8 months to be able to afford a proper receiver, as he was still running 3.1 (I remember when that was the top banana).

True, but I don’t think I’m enough of an audiophile to tell the difference unless I was _really_ trying to. Even then, who knows.

Yeah, a bit steep, but quality sound does cost more. And the difference can be startling.

That’s a tad bit pricey next to the $30 speakers I bought at Wal-Mart. Hell, that costs more than my 5.1 home theater surround sound system that has a five disc DVD upscaler.

So chances are I won’t be picking this up.
