Razer Reveals Star Wars: The Old Republic Peripherals

Razer is a company that always seems to be out in front of the trends in hardware and peripherals. Last year at E3, we sat down with them to check out their new lineup of Starcraft 2 peripherals. This year, they’re launching another branded line, only this one is for MMO gamers: Star Wars: The Old Republic.

On the Razer site for the new hardware, you can see the new keyboard, mouse, headset and mouse pad. Obviously, there’s no word on pricing or launch dates, but we hope to see some of that when we sit down with Razer at E3 this week. We can see that you’ll have interchangeable emblems for the Empire and the Galactic Republic, so you can show your allegiance to the faction of your choice.

Here’s a trailer showing off the new goodies (well, the keyboard at least):

The keyboard “track-panel” looks like something from Art. Lebedev Studio.

I’m guessing here that it will function on a per-game basis. It’s either going to fail as a gimmick or fill nicely as a niche role, depending on how friendly Razer’s software complements it.

I can’t find any info from Razer’s site regarding the tech involved in the display portions. I’m guessing (like the Optimus) OLED? Youtube channel says otherwise (LCD). What’s the res of the trackpad and individual keys? Can I program everything myself? Is there going to be an SDK?

The rest of the keyboard looks pretty “meh” for $199. But the Optimus stuff costs alot more than this. So it could be an interesting niche that Razer is trying to get people to bite on.

If it’s up to Optimus standards, Razer should consider just selling the right side part. A programmable LCD+touchpad to complement an existing keyboard+mouse would sell like hotcakes. Plus I’d rather have the touchpad to the left of my WASD setup.

Oh yeah, also make it in black. Not all of us out there are Star Wars freaks. ;)
