Red Dead Might Have Cost $100 Million, Or Maybe It Was Some Completely Different Amount
Man, that was pretty crazy news yesterday that Red Dead Redemption might have cost $100 million to make. That number came from the UK’s Daily Mail, and here is the quote from the article: “Makers Rockstar Games are thought to have spent up to $100million on the long-awaited project.” And here is a cutline on one of the screenshots accompanying the story online: “With professional actors voicing the game, and detailed scenery, the game cost $100m to make.”
Those quotes sound legit, huh? As in, they sound a bit too confident to be guesswork, eh? Well, the smart people at Develop thought to ask where that number came from, and it turns out that “the game cost $100m to make” was not supposed to be taken at face value.
Apparently the number came from looking up the rumored budget for Grand Theft Auto IV ($100 million) and then guessing that Red Dead may have also cost that much. In the journalism business, we have a term for that: “bad journalism.” I guess the moral of this story is that we should never believe anything the Mail ever publishes because maybe they just guessed about that, too.
