Red Faction: Battlegrounds announced for XBLA and PSN

There was a lot of speculation over the weekend about THQ making a downloadable companion title to the the next Red Faction game. The company had registered a domain titled, and that kicked off the rumor machine.

Well, we now know what THQ has on tap, and it’s exactly what the rumors have predicted. At GDC Europe today, THQ announced Red Facton: Battlegrounds, a downloadable title for PlayStation Network and XBox Live Arcade.

Battlegrounds is a vehicular combat title that’s being developed by the studio that created Juiced. You’ll pilot cars, mechs and rovers in a top-down view that allows up to four players to be onscreen simultaneously. You’ll also be able to earn achievements in Battlegrounds that will unlock unique content in the upcoming Red Faction: Armageddon.

No word yet on when we’ll see Battlegrounds hit the downloadable market, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
