Report: G4 Is About To Be Rebranded And/Or Killed
Well, it had to happen some time. Years of dwindling ratings and a general culture that only occasionally doesn’t truck in stupid or sexist tropes have apparently taken its toll on G4, and the network is not long for this Earth. Variety is reporting that G4 parent company NBCU is planning a major rebranding of the channel next year, away from Geek Chic and in the direction of something like Esquire or GQ, “modern male,” so Variety says. “The guy-centric net is mulling a more sophisticated look,” according to the report, “while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots.” So don’t expect it to be completely sans-video games. Just, hopefully, a little less poorly dressed.
It’s like NBCU said “We want to make Spike’s well-dressed older brother sharp! Ditch the video games, get a new wardrobe and lets go clubbing!” Will it work? Possibly; Spike TV already does something similar, and they have the hilariously awful VGAs, something I can’t believe G4 didn’t think of first. There’s also a plethora of other dude-focused networks in the manly/testosterone sphere. Maybe switching to “let’s go wine tasting after we play Assassin’s Creed” will pay off. At very least, it’ll be nice if they can find people who aren’t anorexic models for their on site events coverage.
H/T to 8Bits and Pieces.
