Report: G4 Is About To Be Rebranded And/Or Killed

Well, it had to happen some time. Years of dwindling ratings and a general culture that only occasionally doesn’t truck in stupid or sexist tropes have apparently taken its toll on G4, and the network is not long for this Earth. Variety is reporting that G4 parent company NBCU is planning a major rebranding of the channel next year, away from Geek Chic and in the direction of something like Esquire or GQ, “modern male,” so Variety says. “The guy-centric net is mulling a more sophisticated look,” according to the report, “while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots.” So don’t expect it to be completely sans-video games. Just, hopefully, a little less poorly dressed.

It’s like NBCU said “We want to make Spike’s well-dressed older brother sharp! Ditch the video games, get a new wardrobe and lets go clubbing!” Will it work? Possibly; Spike TV already does something similar, and they have the hilariously awful VGAs, something I can’t believe G4 didn’t think of first. There’s also a plethora of other dude-focused networks in the manly/testosterone sphere. Maybe switching to “let’s go wine tasting after we play Assassin’s Creed” will pay off. At very least, it’ll be nice if they can find people who aren’t anorexic models for their on site events coverage.

I think if the advertisement department is on the ball and really and I mean REALLY works, this could possibly work. Because lets face it, Spike TV always has been and probably always will be a joke. Its laboring under the delusion that all men are beer swilling adrenaline junkies that care more about being XTREEME than they do about being a decent human being. So I think there is an area for a channel for men that doesnt assume all men are effing morons.

I used alot of “coulds” and “possiblies” and I think if this any ANY potential of working, they need to drop the G4 label and just make it a brand spanking new channel.

Thank goodness. Bout the only thing I watch the channel anymore for these days is ninja warrior. All the good shows about games/tech died off years ago. X-play is barely the same show it used to be, and attack of the show is just about everything wrong with the channel right there.

I have no idea how they’re going to rebrand it, without making it more ridiculous (as bad as attack of the show is, I can’t imagine it being any better if you threw them in tuxidoes and monacles), but here’s hoping it works.

More importantly, let’s have some decent shows on again huh?

“Geek chic” yeah of course, they have -two- tech related shows. TechTV was infinitely superior in everyway, to bad they sold out and joined G4. Really though, there’s no reason to watch the network now… Adam Sessler left X-Play, and he pretty much made that show; other than that you have re-runs of Cops, and Cheaters, and Attack of the Show which has gone downhill significantly.
