Report: Microsoft’s Next Xbox Will Drop the Disc Drive

Got your salt ready? Here comes an anonymous report from an unnamed source about something crazy that you should be inclined to disbelieve.

That report is that Microsoft is telling developers that it won’t be using discs in the next Xbox, which might be out next year. The report comes from MCV, and curiously, sites unnamed sources who claim to be under the “strictest NDA they’d ever seen” — so strict, apparently, that they went right out and leaked it to MCV.

Similar to the media that Sony is using on the Playstation Vita, the new Xbox will ditch discs in favor of some kind of solid-state media, the report says, and won’t have a disc drive at all.

MCV says the 2013 launch for the next Xbox is “confirmed,” as well. I guess we’ll see.

Here’s the statement Microsoft issued in response to the story:

Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.

This has to be fake , otherwise the console will be a huge flop in country’s that don’t have unlimited download plans , eg Australia .

thumbdrives & flash media are just as easy to copy… they should give up on this anti-piracy lark somebody’s always gonna defeat them out there somehow.
