Report Says Xbox One Costs ~$471 to Build
The researchers at IHS have taken a look at the internals in the Xbox One and have come to the conclusion that the thing costs about $471 in parts and labor to construct. They believe that the new Kinect accounts for about $75 of that, with the AMD APU bringing in another $110 or so and the rest of the construction running $330 or thereabouts (it is kind of a giant box). This doesn’t mean MS is making money on each unit sold with the $500 price point — moving all these things around the world isn’t cheap — but it is worth noting that in real-world terms North America does get the console cheaper than most other places (429 British pounds is way more than $500, for example), but it’s good to know they aren’t hemorrhaging cash on it now.
Also, the $60 gamepad only costs like $15, so that’s cool. To see how that stacks up against the PS4 internals, be sure to check out Devin’s discussion of that from last week.
