Report: Valve Working On A Steam Console
Big news people. The Verge is reporting a rumor that, if true, could send a nuclear bomb through the gaming console industry and completely upend the idea of PC gaming. Supposedly – and please do take this with a huge grain of salt until it’s confirmed – Valve is working on a Steam gaming console.
Valve hasn’t confirmed anything, but as The Verge notes, Gabe Newell recently hinted at such a device, saying “Well, if we have to sell hardware we will.” However, Valve apparently isn’t planning to enter the hardware game themselves. Instead, so sources claim, they’re drawing up hardware and software specs for a device that would be built by third parties; specs apparently include Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The device might take advantage of other projects Valve has been working on, incorporating biometric feedback for example; other information associated with this rumor suggests their goal might not be to take out Xbox and Playstation, but to go after Apple TV, a worthy goal if ever we heard one.
With GDC coming up next week, there’s strong speculation that Valve might be planning their announcement to coincide; our own Ben Richardson will be on the scene to report any news as soon as it breaks.
