Resident Evil 6 Review: So Much Game You’ll Have to Like Something

But there’s just so much. There are more huge and crazy set pieces packed into this game than a Call of Duty title. There’s straight third-person shooting, zombie mayhem, and unkillable beasts that chase you three-quarters of a level before a showdown. Resident Evil 6 changes things up so often, it’s hard not to find something you like about it. And it’s a great deal more fun to play with other people.

So in the end, it’s hard not to be torn about how I felt about the game. Some bits were really great. Some bits were pretty crap. But the total experience — I think I liked it.

And it’s hard to be too angry with a game that’s so ambitious, even if it stumbles a number of times as it gets on its feet.

Pros:

  • Crazy amount of content: could reasonably be several games
  • Tons of action-heavy set pieces, several of which are pretty stellar
  • Awesomely cinematic and graphically beautiful
  • Four different campaigns, each with a different play style
  • Cooperative modes all the way through, plus competitive online play for each chapter
  • The Mercenaries mode makes another solid comeback
  • Character stories and arcs are pretty compelling
  • Story delivered in pieces, from different perspectives, is cool
  • Check points are frequent, so even when you die you won’t have to re-play much

Cons:

  • Quick-time events. Lots of quick-time events.
  • Some dumb and puzzling design choices
  • Some levels are not very fun; some events are really irritating
  • Ammo can be scarce for seemingly no reason
  • You still have to deal with things like inventory management and herb mixing, even though they add nothing to the experience
  • Really best enjoyed with others; in fact, not really that good alone

Final Score: 75/100

I saw that every other major site on the internet gave a review score of under 6 and really hated the game and here comes the one site I know who is more thoughtful and intelligent about their opinion so I expected something under 2.
Instead, I find that you somehow managed to find what made the game interesting instead of only hating the things that don’t work. You guys really are rebels, aren’t you.

So uh…is this a positive comment or a negative one?

You guys are amazing! Other stupid sites game this game a freakin 6 or 7 saying its and not what expected from the franchise. Well fudge that! I expect from a game to be fun and beautiful and for what I’ve played in the demo I think this game got me sold. It’s not scary but it’s plain fun and that’s what matters to me ;) Really nice review Phil! I dont know why gamefront doesn’t have like millions of people come in every day… Both your youtube and page are awesome ;)

Hey, thanks! Appreciate it. Though I must say, I’ve read a few other reviews, like Jim Sterling’s over at Destructoid. And his issues with the game really are valid — I was pretty annoyed with it too. I think the good parts won me over a bit more than they did him, and I think I was a little more impressed with the amount of game you get for your money. Where I think it falls is co-op — if you intend to play co-op, you’ll probably have a good time. If you play alone (as I suspect most reviewers did, and I did), then the game may well suck for you. So mileage may vary, but I don’t think the sites that are down on the game are wrong. There are a lot of stupid design choices in there.

Still, very much appreciated that you’re enjoying our stuff! We’ll try to keep it up.

The general vibe I’ve been getting makes me think this game will be rather divisive since most reviews mention that the game does several things well and several things poorly, and it really comes down to how those things balance for each person playing it.

Definitely a good thing. You think instead of deliberately bashing or praising a game based on arbitrary factors that have nothing to do with anything.

Exactly what i have in mind but positively ^^. Gamefront are no whores like IGN or Gamespot. They review a game for what it is and not for what they expected.

I crave impending doom… gotta keep waiting for it. Even if it was in a little sequence at the end of Leon’s Campaign… it should’ve been the whole game.
