Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City Due For ‘Winter’ Release
Fans of genetically engineered zombie apocalypses (and Mila Jovovich) can rejoice. Today, Capcom has confirmed what we all already know, that the next console installment in the impossible-to-kill series is a go. Resident Evil; Operation Racoon City somewhat flips the script on the series as it has existed so far. In addition to returning to Raccoon City, the setting of Resident Evil 2 and 3, it also departs from the 3rd person shooter/survival horror format, aiming instead for:
“…a true third person team based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe and a reinterpretation of the events depicted in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) add to the mix as players not only compete against an opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element, creating a brand new style of gameplay and breaking the conventions of traditional team based shooters.”
Capcom is confirming online coop multiplayer; that’s a pretty interesting change. One assumes this means either online-only arenas, or that the main game will be a much more open-ended sandbox style game than we’ve ever seen in the Resident Evil series. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this, especially since this definitely is not meant to be Resident Evil 6.
Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City is due ‘this winter’ for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Since they didn’t say ‘the holiday season’, expect this to mean ‘Winter, 2011′ and plan accordingly. More news will surely pop up as we get closer to E3 2011, and we’ll let you know when it does.
