Rewrite History with Dota 2′s New Replay Takeover Mode

Post-match discussions on how battles are won or lost — a skill shot landed (or missed), a life-saving ability cast a moment before death (or after) — is a big part of the Dota 2 experience. Imagine if you could go back, and not simply chat about what you did or didn’t do during a match-turning fight, but actually replay it?

Well, now you can. And you don’t need a flux capacitor-equipped DeLorean to do it, either.

The latest Dota 2 update from Valve is called the New Bloom Festival. The festival celebrates the ending of the wintry Frostivus event and the beginning of spring in Dota land. The update features two new characters, Terrorblade and the Phoenix. Most notably, though, is the new Replay Takeover mode.

Here’s how it will work: watch any replay of a match created after the New Bloom update, hit the new ‘Takeover’ button, and you’ll be able to select which hero you want to become. Resume, and you’ll be able to play the rest of the match from that moment forward and, potentially, rewrite your own personal Dota 2 history.

Lots more in the New Bloom Festival, including a new blossom-filled look for the Dota 2 map, a powerful new monster camp featuring a creature called the Year Beast, new items and skins, and a ton of character tweaks.

Check it all out this afternoon. The Dota 2 New Bloom Festival begins today.
