Ridiculous: One Boss in Final Fantasy XI Takes Over 18 Hours to Defeat

Anyone who’s played a strenuous RPG has probably encountered a boss that took an hour or more to defeat, even with great equipment, fine-tuned strategy, and a lot of luck. But I doubt anyone else out there has gone through what the members of the Final Fantasy XI guild, “Beyond the Limitation,” have gone through recently. They banded together to take a serious crack at one of the game‘s most difficult bosses: Pandemonium Warden. After over 18 hours of play and 20 different forms of the boss though, the group still wasn’t able to take him down. Eventually they all decided to give up, fearing they might become another cautionary tale of online gaming. According to one member named “Sylphet”:

“People were passing out and getting physically ill. We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible new story about how video games ruin people’s lives…None of us doubt that PW can be killed.  We just call into question exactly what the development team thinks is reasonable from human beings.”

This does seem to contradict the message that Square-Enix gives to all player (shown above). You can’t exactly log out of a boss battle and then pick up where you left off. I’ve heard of people spending loads of their time just grinding or doing various quests, but just ridiculous to have to spend that much time on one single goal.

Who the hell has this kind of time? Why would somebody write the code for a boss that can’t be beaten in 20 hours. All of this nonsense is plain stupid

Tell me about it the bosses in World of Warcraft make me annoyed and they only take 30 minutes maximum (with a large raid size)

Who in the right mind would try and defeat this boss its stupid, people have limits and that boss breaks the limit down into little pieces, stamps on it, goes to the toilet on it and spit on it the incinerates it.

(yeah that was random but it had to be said.)

They don’t expect many people to beat it. If you want a game where everyone can beat every boss then FFXI isn’t for you. It’s a hard core MMO taking on average 8 months for a new player to hit max level playing every day. That disclaimer is for legal purposes only.

FFXI is known for having end game content and then elite end game content for the people who want to be the best and or have no life.

WTF?!?! ok first off, why make a boss that takes 18+ hours to kill and then put that disclaimer up? And secondly, who in the hell that that sort of time? I mean seriously, it would take 3 DAYS in 8 hour bursts to take a boss like that down. And for what? what is the reward for wasting three days on a single fraking boss? This is why i like FPS games. To kill your opponent or target in a RPG: Grind for a month and then burn three days to kill a boss. What it takes to kill an opponent in a FPS game with a sniper rifle: Move the crosshairs into alignment with the target’s head. Click once. Gloat to taste. Much easier. and for those who whine that snping in an FPS game is for wussies, try hitting a target three pixels wide at 1280×800 resolution that is across the map moving at better than 77mph. And then try doing it fifteen times IN A ROW while guarding your own arse from ppl coming in through the portal behind you. In the words of sam jackson, “That takes skill.”

I’ve said Final Fantasy XI is for the masochistic, but this is bleeping ridiculous. It would be funny if a bunch of people sat in front of their PCs, playing on their PS2/3s and Xbox 360s killing a monster together and bam NOTHING dropped. Nothing but time wasted to other people but, for the ones that actually participated it would be something worth bragging about. I can’t imagine after reaching upon level 11 (perhaps it’s level 12) via solo then having to group from there on out to anticipate sitting for 18 hours straight not being able to log take a break and rest my eyes as well as body. Square Enix or at least the developers love the masochist players.

Yea, the key is that it is optional.

Some people like that level of difficulty, as in WoW things are very easy, and geared towards people who only play between one and three hours in a night. I remember the old Molten Core days when we’d spend six hours clearing it.

It was one night a week, and it was what you had to do to get better gear.

Now, things are done in three+ hours… but yea.

Yeah, but the issue is this boss was in game for a year and NO ONE beat it, and eventually Squex had to start dropping hints in videos.

That’s idiotic game design. If you make something that no one can conceivably know how to beat unless they use non-diagetic material, that’s bad design. Optional or not it is the worst kind of game making.

@ GeorgeR
your thinking of a different boss you are talking about Absolute Virtue(AV) a sea HNM this is actually a very recent ZNM and has only been out mabe like 1 1/2 months…
although from the way this looks this may be another “release the video” type of boss and yes, i do agree SE’s logic blows
