RIFT Patch 2.1 Launches, F2P This Weekend, Staff Cut…Wait, What?
It’s the best of times and the worst of times for Trion’s AAA MMORPG RIFT: Planes of Telara. Today a new content patch drops filled with end game goodness including a new 20-player raid against RIFT bad guy Regulus in the Plane of Death. It also introduces an event pitting the player base against the Crucia, the Plane of Air villainess introduced in last month’s Storm Legion expansion. And, of course, ’tis the season for holiday themed content and Telarans can get their fill with the Fae Yule World Event.
To sweeten the deal, Trion has announced that former subscribers can return for a free weekend of play from December 14-18. This free weekend includes all the content and features of the Storm Legion expansion. That means you can try out the four new souls, the new player housing mechanic called Dimensions, and the new zones and raids. This also is available to players who are enjoying the first 20 levels for free under the RIFT Lite trial plan.
Unfortunately, things aren’t going so well behind the scenes. Trion let go as much as a third of the development staff behind the game this week. No concrete reason was given, but RIFT being one of the few remaining monthly subscription AAA games in a sea of quality free to play offerings likely informed the decision. No sales figures were given, but one could assume that this wouldn’t have happened if last month’s expansion had sold better.
Do you still enjoy RIFT? Does this weekend’s offer make you want to come back? Let us know in the comments.
