RIFT Preparing for Faction Unification and PvP Normalization

Big changes are coming to RIFT, including PvP normalization and the first steps toward faction unification.

Community Manager James Nichols revealed that the game’s two competing factions, the Guardians and the Defiant, will take the first steps in the final pre-expansion update. While the two factions will remain philosophically opposed, they are putting aside their differences in the face of a greater threat.

This will be realized in-game via greater inter-faction communication and interaction. First, both factions will be able to join together for public groups, trading, the dungeon finder, raids, instant adventure, and weddings. The RIFT team also has plans to open up chat channels, quest sharing, guilds, friends list, and more between the two sides. There will be exceptions to some of these features on PvP servers.

PvP normalization will have all players competing in PvP with the same stats and no benefits from gear. Trion Worlds has assured players that the game will retain “meaningful PvP progression,” but that this normalization will put the emphasis on skill rather than gear.

The PvP community had been calling for PvP where gear doesn’t matter since beta. It never happened and most PvP players unsubscribed. Those who stuck with it spent hundreds of hours grinding gear which will now be useless. Haha.

The success of guild wars 2 (even before launch) has both rift and WoW making major changes to their games in an effort to duplicate it’s success.
