RIFT Server Mergers in Preparation of Storm Legion

Trion has been at work upgrading its server infrastructure in preparation for Storm Legion, increasing server capacity so that they could migrate players and cut down on the total number of shards in the game.

The migrations went into effect yesterday, leaving affected players with the option of which server to transfer their characters to.

“The advancements we’ve made this year have effectively doubled the capacity of the individual servers allowing more of you to play together than ever before while reducing the total number of shards we need to support RIFT’s active population.

“What this means for you – we can now support all of our North American players on a single wargroup, further reducing queue times for dungeons and PvP while bringing the community even closer together.”

Is that just PR spin on server mergers due to decreased server population? Maybe. Regardless, having players spread out over fewer servers strikes me as a good thing. Assuming the game can support the traffic, I believe all MMOs should have only one server — or a couple, if there’s a need for PvP and non-PvP servers. What do you think?

I just started playing a couple days ago and well the servers are mostly dead, I was on bricliff or what ever the name was, it had a total of 8 lv 50 toons online including myself, the main citys are dead with usually 1 person in them, I just transferred to seastone the only pvp server still active and that server seems to have a really low population also.

I really hope this expansion brings people back because this is a great mmo.
